I never felt shorthanded with the 5.56 but some situations could become a little "tricky". I think that after all Stoner was also right about the small form factor round and caliber even after so much criticism but he was over 50 years ahead of his time. The new solid bullet designs are changing dramatically the way we look at "the little 223 rem round that could",... including the military. Read this about the new M855A1. I was expecting something good coming but this is much better than anyone expected. This looks like nice progress... bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2010/06/u-s-army-issues-new-m855a1-ammo-to-troops-in-afghanistan/Anyone has been using this? I wish we had this type of performance when I was in the service. I have a call in the distribution service here to contact liberty. I cannot wait to try some. These guys seem to have different bullet but ..yes! very similar and the same principals for design. This is the video.... www.youtube.com/watch?v=ap8O9...ayer_embedded#!

Reports I've heard coming back from Afghanistan over the last year are that the M855A1 is much more accurate and lethal at longer ranges than the M855, especially in the 300-600m range. The bullet, even at 600m, is coming apart in at least 2 pieces with the penetrator steel tip going usually straight through and the base coming off, sometimes fragmenting into several more pieces, and usually exiting in another location. I've seen the briefing from Picatinny Arsenal saying something like 5 shot group in 6" circle at 600m and that sounds about like what's coming in from the field. I've heard about a 400m head shot with a 10" barreled M4 on a Taliban who stood up thinking he was outside the effective range of the 5.56 round. I haven't heard anything about hard target performance from Afghanistan.

Very nice info. Thanks for sharing. Any independent reports or unbiased opinions based on experience is what we want. I told the ammo dist. center here to order some from liberty and they are looking into it. Thanks again.

One other thing, the hard steel (tungsten?) tip can be turned by hand in the jacketed base. It doesn't seem to effect accuracy, but troops seem to think it aids in steel core separating from base on impact.

I have a copy of the General Briefing on the M855A1 cartridge from PM Small Caliber Arms in .pdf format that I would be glad to post here, if someone would tell me how.

Thanks...good info. This may help explain the sudden flood of Federal/LC M855 ammo on the civilian market. I'm not a fan of the M855 round so this looks like an improvement and I would like to see it objectively tested against the Mk262

The 885 will do many things very well. This is yet another improvement.

Here is another article on the M855A1 with a little better picture of the bullet's construction If you take a close look at the steel "stacking cones" tip you will see that it resembles a Christmas Tree. So for all those Taliban out there, here's a Merry Christmas shooting your way! Attachments:

Wow! Hadn't heard of this one. I remember reading in an Army Times about the "green" steel round a year or so ago. Just looking at those graphs/images it looks like the new round does quite a bit of extra work. That's really great to see. Imagine an M249 spitting out a heaping helping of the M855A1. That's a force to be reckoned with.
