I'm thinking of a 20 " BHW barrel in 6 x45 as soon as I can find a used set of Redding dies in that caliber. What kind of accuracy can I expect with careful handloads for deer? I have a JP trigger on my lower and a 5.5 x 16 Nikon on my upper. The upper has a squared receiver to true the barrel fit. Thanks.

Pretty darn accurate. I have an 18" barrel I'm just starting to get sorted out. I put some rounds together to break in the barrel and without trying too hard I'm getting easy sub 1" groups. Only got about 50 rounds through it. Best group so far is 3 holes touching with 2 more taking the group to .786" With some more development it should only get better.
I've been using the RCBS SB dies and they work great. $37 plus shipping from Midway was hard to resist.
Good Luck! Cliff

I think I'll go with the 18" barrel too. Did you get the barrel fluted or is it fairly light w/o the fluting? Thanks for the tip on the Midway dies.

If you get the 18" barrel I suggest you go with the mid length gas system I have the rifle length gas system and I'm having some issues with functioning.
My barrel is standard profile, unfluted. I don't think it's too heavy. I have a thread here with pics if you want to see my rifle.

cb, I have the MI hand guards on my AR's and really like them. Your rifle looks great. I wonder how the round is on big Iowa deer. I use non adjustable gas blocks on my rifles.

If your going to use it for Deer please go with the 20" Bbl.
The weight difference is minimal and you will get the extra velocity to help take down the game animal...
The 20" Bbl. will also give you the option of going with the rfile length gas system or the mid-length gas system...
The good news is the 6x45 caliber is the simplest wildcat you can go with and have plenty of published load data and dies are usually easy to find.
Just my two cents...YMMV
Good Luck.

I like the MI hand-guards too. I have the Gen I quad rail on one of my 5.56 guns. I like it but the aluminum barrel nut has always kind of bothered me. This was the first time I tried the MI Gen II SS. Very easy install but I'm not sure I like the slim design. I prefer the hand filling quad rail. I see MI just came out with a Gen II quad rail so that will be on my next build.

The 20" bbl on my AR build was running about .600-.750" @ 100yds no matter the bullets from the 80g jsp/85g sgkhp or 95g nosler HBT.

I have seen on the postings talk about the 6x45 in a 20" mid length gas system but i am not able to find it. I was thinking I wanted to go with the 20" over the 18" to get the extra little bit of fps. I know it is going to be a wait but I would like to at least finally make up my mine.

Call them up and place the order. They will do a mid if you want it but on a 20 I don't see an advantage. YMMV. Greg

The best STANDARD dies on the market are the Hornady New Dimensions IMHO. They are also far cheaper than RCBS last time I looked. I have two sets of them and they have worked well for going on 25 years. Greg BTW: The only thing good about SB dies is that the company making them gets more of your money. There is absolutely no need for them in AR's, IMHO.

cb4017Sounds like you have some good luck with your barrel ... I have not. Can you tell me what you were loading to get the less than 1 MOA. I have tried everything from 55gr Varmageddon, 70gr Nosler, 75gr Hornady, 80gr nosler, 87 vmax and about the best is a 3" group with the 55gr. Varmas ... the heavier the bullet the larger the group. I would think I could get good accuracy at least up to the 80gr.
