Does anyone else feel that the 6.5/.264 is a great caliber option for patrol rifle or police countersniper weapons? I think it would be a poor choice due to the case design. The 6.8 comes close enough that the Grendel doesn't offer anything that I would put my bacon on the line with. I shoot both the cases in my rifles and I feel the 6.8 would be hands down more reliable over a long time. As for counter sniper work I think the closest to 6.5 I would step down to would be a 260 Remington. The 308 does yeoman duty now and it does well. When I taught that's all we had. Ideally, given a radical, out of the box fix, I would go with the 243 Winchester ala Plaster. Greg

Patrol rifle
For a patrol rifle the 6.8spc carbine is a great option as already stated. The lbc cannot be trusted as it can have reliability issues so people serious about dependability look to cartriges with military style type of shoulder that feed well clean or dirty, wet or dry. The 6.8 has enough horse power to deal with the average urban ranges and more but consider a light 308w if one is in a rural / low populated area. My "goto" carbines are piston driven using 5.56 OSST/OTM penetrating rounds. At high rates of fire giving cover with suppressing fire the AR bolts go on fire. Point of failure is far away from the normal fighting scenario but the point of failure of a nice piston is far beyond what the DI can sustain. Look into H&K offerings. if the money is tight then look into a nice AK that takes stanag magazines. Some people also do 6.8 AKs. I am saying this because a patrol rifle should be treated as if it was your service and therefore it is your life, you know. Also don't discard a nice molot (beefed up) AK47 but again depending on the range. The 6.8 is far superior ballistic-ally talking and specially if someone sees the possibility to having to engage beyond 200 yards. AKs are not as accurate as the ARs but those beefed up AKs are a lot more accurate than the average AK. Krebs makes custom ones that shoot below MOA. But a nice AR barrel with a nice bolt and a proven piston retrofit could serve you well too.
Countersniper
In a counter-sniper role you will most likely have a special unit (lets say SWAT sniper team) that are most likely fitted with a high precision bolt action in 308winchester or 300 winmag. Theats are normally neutralized in 1 to 3 shots and we go home. Intelligence and careful planing is the main weapon here. I have seen some other calibers but that is not the norm in police/urban teams. 308w reigns in this area. Anyway for the people curious about the equipment, that is important but it is a small fraction of one worries in counter-sniper tactics taking into consideration all the training and qualifications needed and the thousands and thousands of dollars and time that goes into that. I see the 6.8 also being a great choice for the spotter in a 18 inch DMR fitted carbine but not sure how much people outside the military and other special units are using. The local swat sniper team uses 308w and 5.56. I shoot with them every other week. A 308w repeating carbine might be also issued to the spotter but a lot of branches are doing things a tad different depending on the departmental needs and tactics.
hope this helps.
