went out this morning to to check out a few new spots before an upcoming tournament. the first stand ended up with a stand off of challenge howls. The next two were blanks. The forth stand started off with a long walk out and around to remain unseen on the approach. Once we hit the fence row we were planning to set up our ambush on we turned and followed the fence deep into the swell in the bean field surrounded by clear cut woods/brush. I set the Fury up in a downed tree and started off with Kitten in distress. 3 minutes into the sequence i see a dog busting out of the brush to my right at about 200 yards. I realize i didnt have my decoy on the call moving. Once the dog stopped around 150 yards i triggered the Foxpro decoy and it set a fir under the big boys @@$$. I let him get to about 40 yards, I barked him to a stop. I leveled my 20 Practical and sent the 35gr Berger pill square between the shoulders of the old male. The full frontal shot sent him into a spinning/flipping frenzy. I quickly switched to pup/fox fight, then to challenge barks, then back to pup/fox fight. After 4 minutes i motioned to my buddy to get up just in time to see another hard charger coming over the hill. The dog topped the hill just as i motioned with my hand (biggest no no, never wave your hand on stand) He stopped at what i thought was 300 yards. I help my crosshair on the top of his head and sent another, just to see him turn and run. After he ran i ranged it and he was only 200 yards. So needless to say i shot right over him. I dont take head shots but it was another frontal shot so i figured the bullet would drop into his neck or chest if he was farther then i estimated (not the case). I should of had another double but my own brain fart educated another dog.
looks like we are getting a big snow tomorrow night so hopefully we get some hunting done
