I've been looking into a Midwest Industries hand guard and most places seem to sell it with the barrel nut. Does anyone have any input on whether or not you need to use a specific type of barrel nut with a hand guard, or are they pretty much compatible?

from the ones i have used. if you are using a free float hand guard most come with the barrel nut because they are specific to that hand guard. not always but most of the time.
especially if you are talking the midwest gen 2 free float.

All quality ff tubes, that I know of, come with the nut. For the price they get for them, they better.
Some are interchangeable, my Midwest Industries T series, has the same nut as my YHM Lightweight.

Thanks guys. The Wolverine, what are your thoughts on the MI vs the YHM? Any severe difference? I like the YHM Todd Jarrett hand guards because they have a full top rail and also quad rails on the business end. It seems as if you want quad rails on the MI, they are all full length rails which I don't need.

That's the one I've been looking at. Especially because I have smaller hands. Did you have any trouble finding a gas block that's compatible being it has a smaller ID?

no i didn't the gas block i had for the build worked. it is a daniel defense clamp on unit. you wouldn't want it any bigger but it just fit.
i think any low pro block that is set screwed will work. clamp on types will be the tight ones.
and yes i love the small diameter it just makes the gun feel smaller and lighter.
