I'm in the process of building my first AR in 5.56 and am debating between a target crown vs. threaded barrel. Advantages of threads seem to be 1) option of buying a suppressor later (with tax stamp etc), 2) improved night shooting with flash hider, and 3) ability to add a compensator/brake. I don't really see myself getting a suppressor or doing much night shooting, so is the comp/brake really that much of an advantage on such a low recoil caliber? Alternately, would I be able to get a crowned thread protector and have the best of both worlds, or should I just to with the regular crown? Thanks.

If you want a suppressor the threads are good. A thread protector is available aftermarket. BHW does not make protectors AFAIK. I shoot both types. For most applications the brake does not add much. It can help for long range varmint but that is still pretty small. Better the extra barrel for velocity IMHO.

I have a threaded muzzle for a few reasons, I have always used a birdcage/flashhider for my coyote AR's.I came across a thread protector for my 5.56 and decided to give it a try. Taking a shot on a coyote early morning really shows the FLASH! For some people thats the norm, But I was very surprised at the amount of flash. No thanks I'll stick with my FH. My second reason is for muzzle/crown damage that can occur out in the field. My gun is in and out of the truck and who knows what can happen afield. Hate to ruin a crown banging it on a rock or dropping it etc... Those are my reasons, and of course we all use our tools in different ways...

A lot has to do with weather you have a shorter than 20" Bbl., the cartridge produces a lot of recoil & flash, or you plan to add a suppressor down the road...Otherwise, just get a target crown w/ no threading.
Good Luck.

I have the same debate as well. My question is that does the flash supressor effect accuracy? If it does what is a good one to get? I am looking at doing the 6x45

I am looking at doing the 6x45 If you mean will it shoot better the answer is no. Realitically hoe many low light shots are you going to take. I would go with a muzzle brake over a flash suppresor for hunting use. Greg

Ok that answers the question on threading or not for me. It will be threaded!
