This is my first build and everything is on order but the barrel, we will see how long the "in stock" parts take to get here. I want to get a barrel 20" long but would like to get it with a mid length gas system. Is it possible to order one like this from BHW? It will have an adjustable gas block and I have an Aero Precision COP upper on the way, the rail is integrated for the optics and is set up for a mid length system. I could just get a rifle length system and have the tube exposed for that extra length or cover it with some sort of rail extension. If I have to I am fine with ordering an 18" barrel with the mid length system but it would be nice to get the extra velocity from the 20", and I wanted to post this and get some opinions or other options from everyone here. Thanks.

If I were to get the 18" would it be better to order it directly from BH or get it from Tactical Ammunition? Does TA have them in stock or do they place orders to BH? It's around $50.00 cheaper from them, anybody know the reason for this? It also looks like they do not offer all the different fluting options. I don't think I will be getting any fluting done so that doesn't really matter to me.

Not sure with your intended application on your build, but just an FYI do some looking on the ballistics on the 264 LBC/Grendel and you will see that the cartridge does not really suffer in velocity in the length of barrel. 18 or 20" will really have no difference for a large majority of shooters.
Just as an example,(from alexander arms)
AA 19.5" Barrel 123 Scenar Muzzle:2565 FPS 1000 yards: 1270 FPS
AA 24" Barrel
123 Scenar Muzzle:2620 FPS 1000 yards: 1300 FPS
Hope this helps.

I want to use it everywhere, but mostly I plan on hunting with it. I have plenty of bolt actions and almost every barrel available for my single shot Contender/Encores and reload for most of them, taking a Moose in Maine with one of my reloads for my 338 Winmag. I have a mini14 for one of my.223's but I am sure I will build one of those also. I find that every 1" of barrel I gain 50-80 fps near the muzzle according to my chrono, depending on the caliber. I would like to squeeze as much out of as I can. I am just trying to get some opinions and other suggestions. Thanks

Did you just happen to pick up that Aero Precision COP upper by chance? No reason, just curious. I actually saw them in stock a few days ago myself and came oh so close to pulling the trigger. They did manage to squeeze an extra $90 and change from me for one of the Areo Precision forged uppers a couple of days later though. LOL! JJ

I ordered the COP from Brownells about a month ago, to match my lower. I called them and they said it was in stock when i ordered it. I usually get a tracking number right away, once they post it to the credit card, but not this time. I am still waiting for a tracking number. I am not sure if the price on this has increased since I ordered, but I haven't been charged any extra yet. I got slammed on the lower also, but with the rules of supply an demand in these times I expect it and it was in stock.

My suggestion would be to order direct from BHW to your specs, in this case a 20" Bbl. w/ a mid-length gas system then throw on a adjustable gas block and be done w/ it.
If you need help or tools send me a email I'm not far from the S.E. CT border...
Good Luck.

Thanks. I am leaning towards ordering it that way. I am pretty sure I have all the tools I need and have friends at the gun shops near me, but I will keep you in mind. I have a seasonal campsite just over the border into RI and will be heading there soon.

I was expecting someone would respond with the comparison between the rifle vs mid length gas system on a 20" barrel. Am I right in thinking that an adjustable gas block would make the mid length work well with the 20" barrel? I guess I will post my concerns on 24hr campfire I am sure some one will want to argue the point.

I guess I will post my concerns on 24hr campfire I am sure some one will want to argue the point. In all honesty the addition of an adjustable GB would be a smart move on any of these non-223 guns. The mid vs rifle is pretty subjective in my opinion. The recoil impulse is report by many to be different with the mid over the carbine being much softer. I have carbines and rifle length and see a huge difference in felt movement/recoil on the shorty. If the mid is in the middle, as most guys only compare the carbine vs mid, I would say it would get my consideration in a go fast shorter gun. I have not bought a middy for personal use but thanks to Ritch I may well be considering one on a future project. I do know that the mis are slightly less reliable, by report, than the full rifles yet they are more reliable than the carbine length. Greg

Just to throw my nickel's worth into the discussion, I purchased a 20" .264 with the rifle length gas system. All the issues I had were self-inflicted, and the rifle cycles beautifully, even w/o an adjustable gas block.
Felt recoil is minimal, and that is with the Dragon Head linear compensator. I don't know if you intend to get a threaded barrel or not, but I've found this particular combination to be quite accurate, grouping at around .5 to .75 MOA, relative to caffeine intake.

I ordered it yesterday ;D 20" with the mid and target crown. It is supposed to be 8 + weeks out. Hopefully all the rest of the parts get here before the barrel so once it gets here I'll be ready for it. I'll post pics and update as I get it going. Thanks.

I am sure you will be happy with the barrel. Let us know how it shoots, when you take it out to let it stretch its legs. David

I can't wait to see how your gun shoots...thats pretty much what I'm wanting to build also... Which type of bolt are you going with?
