So, I was thrilled to see UPS had delivered my new BHW 18" barrel for my new 3 gun build! When I opened the package I saw all this corrosion. I've had several AR barrels and never seen anything like this. I thought I'd come here and see what was going on. I'm concerned about building it now. Also, when I picked up the barrel, my hand looked like I'd been booked at a police station. It took a fair amount of scrubbing to remove the black off my hands. Thoughts?

I am extremely sorry that you received this barrel. There was an issue a while ago about the treatment process that was happening during our blacking process. The issue that occurs is when the surface area around the extension is not removed and then retreated, something that happens during sandblasting, then the salts react with the exposed surface area of the extension and they begin to corrode. We will get you a replacement on the way and you will have it shortly. Once again I apologize and we will get this taken care of immediately. For the future if there are any barrels that have a little corrosion, a brush and some oil will take care of it and neutralize the salts. There shouldn't be any more of them out there as we have changed our process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Is it safe to assume that this corrosion problem was with some of the blackened barrels and it is not an issue with any of the machined and bead blasted barrels?

It only effected Blackened barrels from ONE retailer. All other barrels are not effected

Andy, I just received my 18" barrel yesterday, and while no corrosion is present, I am experiencing the same symptoms of blackened hands as soon as I hold the barrel. Is this a similar situation as described above by telecat?

Is this a similar situation as described above by telecat? Send ANDY a direct note to : andy@blackholeweaponry.comHe doesn't read the board every day. Greg PS: I just consulted with BHW staff on this. The process is an oxidation method and is not a "coating" Suggestion is to take an oily cloth and wipe down the surface. Any loose oxidation should come off and you won't have the shedding/blackening problem.

Thanks GLshooter, I will follow your suggestions. I'm not trying to bad-mouth the company in any way. Your prompt response re-assures my purchase decision. Just concerned as this is the first of my (hopefully many) future orders.

There is no problem, it is a hot salts dipped bath and there will be a little residue that has not adhered to the steel. Basically it is a finish on top of a finish. There is no issue simply wipe it down with an oiled rag and you will remove any of the excess.

Thanks Andy. I will give it a try. I'm already contemplating my next barrel purchase.

Just a quick update on my barrel. BHW sent me the replacement and it looks PERFECT! Thank you guys and Denise for taking care of me and for being such nice people to deal with. With the stress this industry is under with the order volume that is not always the case. Now I'm ready to put this 3 gun rifle together and shoot!

I noticed this on my .264 barrel's extension as well. I did oil it and it seems to of stopped any more from happening, but i was just wondering if this is going to affect performance at all? And will the bolt ware this off? I put the upper together, but am still waiting on a bolt so i havent gotten to see if it does.
