I'm looking to build an AR with the 18 standard profile BHW barrel and a free float quad rail with the gas block still inside the FF rail enclosure, hidden. My question is I want to go with the rifle length to get all the gas/velocity out of the barrel but since free float quad rails are not all the same, what is the length of the FF rail I need to get? What's the length to the gas hole on the barrel? I'm thinking of going with a Yankee Hill FF quad rail. Any help/suggestions would help.
Thanks.

I would go with a mid-length gas system and a rifle length hand guard. Using this combination will give you both performance and reliability.

I think Rich also meant to say the rifle length gas system in an 18" barrel isn't the most reliable and you are better off sticking with the mid length system unless using a longer 20"+ barrel which will give you more velocity anyhow.

I said exactly what I meant. An 18" barrel with a rifle length gas system can be reliable. I have owned more than a few myself. The OP wanted to have the gas block under the hand guard while using a Yankee Hill forend. The only way to make that happen is to use a mid-length gas system.

I had the understanding that if the gas system was too long with s shorter barrel the gun would not function properly. Rich knows a whole lot more about this stuff than I do. Do you run into gas system problems when trying to go subsonic? I will keep my mouth shut and learn. Brian

As the barrel gets shorter you may have to go to a pistol length system. But we are talking about a 5.56 and they don't go sub-sonic well.

Hi jobnc. I'm using an 18" barrel with a rifle length gas system. I was able to fit a BTE Micro Adjustable Gas Block under my Midwest Industries Gen 2 SS Series 15" Hand Guard. Barrel diameter at the gas block is .750"

I just noticed the date on this post. Too little too late? No biggy. You won't be billed for bandwith!! Sometimes older threads are informative in some areas. Fitment and function things are always good. The RL lenght in an 18" tube comes up about once a month so this might handle it for December. LOL Greg
