What are some of the opinions out there regarding optics. I have used the Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP on a custom 300WM and loved it. I also use an EO Tech on my M4 upper. Although my new 264LBC upper is getting the Vortex Viper HS-LR with the Christmas tree reticle, since I prefer using hold-offs.
What are some other preferences out there that you might prefer over these, and why?
(Price is a factor for me, so if you're going to say anything like March, S&B, or any of those unicorn type optics, just understand that I'm a weekend shooter and not a competitor.)

Welcome to the board. I was gonna say US Optics but a unicorn told me they were taking back their golden flatulence and I couldn't use it for coin anymore.. (VBG) You aren't the only one here that has a budget that is not as big as our wants. I use the Vortex Vipers on my long rage guns but for others in competition I have used the Nikon Buckmasters and the now VXII Leupolds that use to be the Vari X-3's. Some of my Nikons run Mil Dots but I taught with them for years. The last ones are shot on my 3Gun rigs at various powers. They are all variables. I also run the occasional dot from PDP2's to Aimpoint 4000's. These can be on my rifles, pistols or shotguns depending on the match. I run an old AimPoint on an XM177 I shoot in FA matches. I just match up the optic to the match. I've also shot a 24X Leupold in F-Class and done well with it. It is usuallyon my test rifle for barrel evaluation and load work ups. I have taught using the 44 MAG MD scopes in my last career and they performed very well for being bargain basement price. The Muellers (SP) that Ritch has been playing with ar ealso getting my attention for a test later in the year. Greg

Greg As a Burris guy, I can honestly tell you that you guys would love the new Burris XTR II's. They are significantly better than the Vortex Vipers (of which I used to own several) for not a whole lot more money. The glass is nicer, since they now have access to Steiner technology. The turrets are 10 mil rotations instead of 5, and have a second rotation indicator, whereas Vortex does not. The Burris tube is 34mm versus 30mm. Both have the same warranty. Seeing is believing. Take a look at one sometime.

That's good information. I looked up the scope and they were running about $1,000 and they all had illumination. The price was also around $1,000. Doing my math that's' about 3 times what I paid for my Vortex Vipers. Did I miss something?
