What can the American 30 do for me and why should I use it over the 6.8,6.5? I like the idea of a larger projectile than 5.56/.223 but living in Illinois hunting with rifles is limited to varmints. As a defense round I completely understand it's advantage of a larger round but what is its intended range? In hog country how does this compare?

Over the 68 and 6.5 for hogs? Bigger bullets is the main one. My understanding is you want to be able to hammer hogs and this one does it well. Plenty of penetration and frontal area to work with. It works well as a deer cartridge out to 300 or so and this was it's original purpose. Think of a 30-30+ P. A perfect round for kids and smaller stature shooters that can't handle any bigger 30 calibers. Carl and his son shot some nice mulies last year with the pics here on the board. Greg PS: Welcome to the board. Lots of interesting wildcats to work with here along with the old standbys.
