First post here. I'm a bit of a newb in the ar's but I've had a stripped upper and lower in the safe for quit a while now. I've built a few great bolt guns, but the more homework I do on the available ar15 cartridges the more money wants to fly out of my wallet. So.. my lofty goal for my first build is to push the terminal effects of a 6.5 to a maximum range. Has anyone had success with 130-140grn vld bullets? Is it even worth it at the given velocities of the 264 with a 22-24" barrel?

Welcome to the board and a new addiction.
The 264 can sling those bullets but doing the ballistics numbers the 123 is probably the best trade off. There are some well performing bullets in that range that will take advantage of the extra speed.
When you speak if terminal performance you open a nebulous area populated by many factors. If you mean little groups or action on warm targets then you have two criteria. Not mutually exclusive but they do place demands on bullet design.
The application of a bullet to a PD vs an elk calls for two different pills with operational speeds coming heavily into the equation.
A few more illustrations or defined applications would help. BTW the Pro Staff has not exceeded 123 grain loadings.

Thanks for the reply. I've had good results with the Amax so the 123 with a g1 of .510 would be great. And from what I've read it's proven well for this case. But the new 143grn eld-x with a g1 of .625 is impressive. Just wondering if its worth the trade off as I have no real word velocities to compare it to. If it is capable and I did choose to play with longer vld loads am I correct to assume the 264lbc as having the most forgiving chamber and mag length for doing so? Just trying to get my ducks in a row for milking the most lethal range on deer before I purchase. Hard question I guess if no one has gone past the 123's.

Under 500 yards that BC will do nothing for you. Maybe 1.5 minutes. I'll run the numbers tomorrow. The speed of the little one will be the key for energy.
Magazine lenght might be an issue but I'd need some measurements to really speak to that. I suspect it is very long. Those plastic tips help our BC's but they eat up magazine space and by fiat case capacity.

That would be great, I dont have tac. What are the benefits of going to the 6.5x6.8 and have you ever played with the 6.5brx?

It should be an interesting five minutes. The benefits of a 6.5X6.8 over the 264 LBC? If you want heavy bullets above 123 you are backing up as the big guys will really eat case capacity at magazine length. The LBC/Grendel is far superior for launching the any 123 and bigger bullet. The 6.5 BRX is a whole different animal. While it has more case capacity it is also longer than the G and shorter than the 6.8. It would handle the bigger ones more than likely. On the negative the case must be fire formed and on the real negative BHW doesn't chamber for it. Greg

OK numbers time. Calculated with JBM.......
123 Nosler @ 2500 ME 1714 BC 0.510
V ENERGY ELEV WIND 300 2015 1109 17.1 7.3 500 1723 811 68.8 21.8
143 Hornady @2350 (extrapolated and may be generous) ME 1760 BC 0.625
V ENERGY ELEV WIND 300 1964 1225 19.1 6.4 500 1782 948 74.4 18.9
Pretty much a wash. I consider them a duck shot at 300. 500 is a challenge and longer would be with a range finder and a very good verified drop table.

Thanks Greg, that pretty much answers my question right there. I think I'll end up with a 22" semibull, rifle length in .264. Even if I never shoot a bigger pill then the 123 out of it I'll be happy. And yes, I will be shooting over 500. Thanks again.
