Trying to get some clarity on a subject that has been beaten to death, 14.5" vs 16". I really like the look and feel of a 14.5" mid-length barrel but have read that length i.e. less dwell time, may be prone to failures and be less reliable than a 16" mid-length barrel. If I add an adjustable gas block, the dwell time issue should be a non factor, I'll be able to open it to allow more gas to assist with cycling. My thought is that if I use a non-adjustable gas block with the 14.5" mid-length with cheap ammo I may get some failures. Is my thinking correct or am I oversimplifying the process? I'm planning on going with either the adjustable Sentry 7 set screw model or the non-adjustable GB7 set screw model from SLR. Both with .750 gas port to match a 14.5" or 16" RTS barrel from BHW. Thank you in advance for your insights. Manny

The adjustable will do nothing to improve on the short barrel. The only way to get there is with a bigger port. Gas pressure is the same but you get higher volumes and that is where the adjustable comes in. I would rather go carbine and call it good.

Greg, So in order to have a 14.5" mid-length run smoothly and reliably, I would have to use a barrel with a gas port diameter larger than .750? I've seen some manufactures offer/use a .625 or .750 in their mid-length builds i.e. BCM, what is the reason to run a smaller port? Thank you

Not all bore sizes require the same size oort. A 223 can use a different size than a 6.8 or 30. Most companies over gas quite a bit because they get less complaints that way. Part of the equation is how long after the port is the barrel. It's impossible to make a blanket statement that XXX port will run in YYY caliber in ZZZ lenght. I have over two dozen BHW A barrels of various gas lenght. Everyone has run without a hitch. I also routinely put adjustable BTE mini-blocks on mine. The nice thing is opening up a port only takes a few minutes Greg

Greg, Thank you for the insight, very much appreciated. I found two RTS barrels that have my interest, the 14.5" 5.56 std mid and a 16" 5.56 std mid. The majority of the ammo I plan to use will be the inexpensive .223 55gr with the occasional 5.56 higher grain, quality stuff. I'd like to have a soft recoil too, in order to instruct my son as well. Which type of gas block do you recommend I use? Again, I appreciate your time and advice on this topic!

They are an Industry Partner here and have a link on the FORUM.. Super product and super prices. I use a lot of the lo- pro mini-blocks that are adjustable. Te abilirty to tune the gas is a nice feature and his blocks cost about 50% less than the fan boy types. Tell the Ritch and Greg sent you. Greg
