I understand the difference in bolt face depth and which chamber belongs with which bolt, but I can't find any info regarding any pros/cons either way. Is there a strength difference or evidence of more bolt breakage with one type? Or is it simply a case of there being two different ways to skin a cat on the market with no real advantage in either direction?

The breakage is virtually not existent with 9310 steel. I believe the 7.62 is inherently stronger because you have less cut down inside the lugs IIRC it was 7% stronger. I/we have NEVER broken a 7.62X39 bolt or an extractor. We went with the 7,62 because Alexander had the Grendel tied up. This BS about extraction being better on a Grendel extractor is pure unadulterated BS and I dare anyone to prove it not. The alleged "FLEET TESTING" you read about doesn't occur with non-military adapted casings. If you test five barrels for a submission then call that FLEET TESTING it is a stretch of a claim. I have NEVER left a case in a chamber in any of my Grendel variants using the 7.62 bolt. Even if you broke an extractor the 7.62 is a lot easier to get than a Grendel extractor. Greg

Thanks for the info, I wondered if Bill Alexander's antics had anything to do with it... Yes and a whole lot of fantasy thinking to support it. Loaded sanely either will last a long time. An important issue is making sure the barrel/upper is square and the axis of the bore is straight. There was a thread several years ago about an AA upper that would bust a bolt in under 20 rounds over and over again. The extension was crooked on the barrel!! If the lugs are not pressing evenly on ANY extension the chance of breakage goes up very quickly regardless of chambering. Greg
