For years I've shot a 20" 6X45 rifle gas H-bar profile with a side mounted dot. I've had a picture posted from time to time of me using it. In Oklahoma I was often faced with LONG stuff out to 300 + yards and I needed that flat 6 MM bullet to work for me. I’ve won enough gold with it in 3Gun and in the Police and Fire Games here in AZ to never feel under-gunned or out equipmented.
Here in AZ they seem to run shorter stuff with a bit more hose and go. I had cast about deciding on what to build and Carl asked me to please go campaign a BHW tube so I figured I could go with some bling this time. This one is an 18" standard profile mid gas with double honeycomb fluting 1:8. It has Young FF tube in place. Threaded and set up with a Miculek comp off my 6 PPC that had weird thread and I had punched for a bigger bullet. I will replace it with another one actually for 223 from him but will probably drill some more ports on the top. It is efficient as all get out but mo' betta is mo' betta. I picked up an adjustable GB from Joe Bobs as George was out of town. I'll replace it next week with a BTE unit once he and I get together on my 7.62X39 project. The lower is the one I built for shooting PD's with a 20 Tactical years ago but I added a few things to make it more high speed low drag over the years for 3Gun. There is a Wilson enlarged bolt release, a Magpul enlarged selector on the left plus the enhanced trigger guard and I will be adding a Brownells enlarged mag button. I had a cheap Remington mongrel scope lying around off an SPS combination 223 I had bought and a Milllet selectable red dot up on the shelf. A bit of shoehorning and it all came together.
The busy side. I haven't tried this one at speed yet so the jury is out. If I don't like it I'll move the dot out to the front of the HG like I have run for over two decades.
Driver's view of the set up. Rotating it ever so slightly to the right brings it up quickly. The dot is sighted for 25 yards so I am GTG on those up close and personal targets with the scope powered up for the longer ranges. Nothing worse than an El Prez at 10 yards.
I had it out to the desert last week and shot twenty five rounds. Twenty to just get a feel for the factory 55 grain FMJ stuff in case I needed to use it and one generic handload that I had loaded in 2002 for PD’s in my UltraMatch OLY gun. Function was 100% with gassing dead on and ejection at 1500. The comp worked well as I knew it would. Groups with IMI 55 grain and Winchester White box 55’s ran right on 1.25 inches with no real attempt to stack them. Good enough for 95% of my shots under speed. ASC magazines were used BTW. For the lasts shots of a very hot day I loaded up five of my varmint loads using a 40 grain Nosler BT. True to my expectations the handloads being a bit more consistent shot a tad better. I put all five in a nice round group that went Not bad for a no- work up load. I can't wait to see how this one does with some quality 55's that I like to run in 3Gun 223's. I have a Major class AR setting here that would be excellent but this one will have to carry the mail unless I get in a full on gaming situation.
I just wanted to get this one in the queue so I could come back as things develop. Hopefully some match application will be included.
