What barrel length do most 3 gun guys use? 16 or 18?
what does your gun with a 16 to 18 inch barrel weigh? what barrel profile are you running?
I'm building my first a.r. and am trying to decide whether I should get a 16 or 18 inch gun. anticipated use would be blasting, hunting, and maybe a 3 gun match or two. Bullets will be everything from a flat based 50 to a 75 grain swift if I can get enough velocity from it. I'm not even sure whether I want a 9 twist or An 8 twist. Mostly I'll shoot the 50 and 55 grain cheap bullets but I might try a few 75 grainers.

WAs thinking about an 18 inch slim barrel. If an m4 carbine barrel weighs 28 ounces then the 18 inch slim barrel at 34 ounces would be similar in weight to the m4 barrel with the main difference being that the 18 incher is two inches longer. Am I correct?

I see around 60% 18" rifle gas barrels, 25% 16" mid length barrels and then a few 16" intermediate gas rifles at matches. Then there's always a few guys with 20" barrels or m4 profile barrels or an SBR or two. That's been a pretty consistent percentage across several states and 3 years, with the intermediate gas 16" barrels more of a recent development. I've held enough 16" and 18" guns to know that the weight difference has much more to do with the barrel profile and other gun parts than the extra two inches.

Also, there's no reason in the world to get a 1 in 9" twist barrel these days. 1 in 8" does everything well and 1 in 7" will still shoot 55gr just fine, not sure about bullets lighter than that though.

I forgot to mention, it's worth it to check out the types of matches you plan to attend. Out west it seems that longer ranges (500+ yards) are common, as well as 18-20" guns. I've been to a region where bay style matches that don't go over 50 yards are common and 10-14.5" barrels are more prevalent.

18" mid would be my choice. I like a standard profile but slim would do it. Ic you want to shoot 75's a 1:8 but a 1:9 will do 98% of most needs for most of us.
I ran 20" and 17.5" 6X45's for decades and was happy with them and won more than my share.
Stick a Miculek comp on their and go conquer.

I went ahead and ordered the 18 inch slim barrel with 8 twist and black finish. Here's hoping that it does well for me. Now i just need to find a decent gas block and tube and a hand guard.

BTE makes good adjustable blocks and HG's. Ifthey are not available the one from Model 1 is a decent HG and Joe Bob sells a serviceable adjustable block that I use at times. I also like Young Manufacturing guards on many rifles. I get gas tubes where ever. No big deal. I have been using whatever Midway has on sale. Greg

Anyone know what diameter gas block the 18 inch slim profile requires?
