what have you found are the most accurate seating depth for the 123 sst? Are you loading magazine length or something less?

I'm trying to develope a hunting round for my BHW 20" 1-8 twist 264lbc. I'm trying to put a load together with the Hornady 123gr SST. My ACS mags will just allow 2.28" coal. So far I've had the best performance out of 26g 8208 seating the 123sst at 2.28. I'd like to push it harder but nothing up to 28g of 8208 seems to group as well. Any suggestions?

That length is about right. Lots of good LBC groups have been done with that bullet and COL.
When did you buy your magazines?

I bought the magazines in the last 6 months. They are being sold by Midway under their AR Stoner brand. Do you usually see two accuracy nodes? One at lower charge weight and one at higher charge weight? Can small changes in charge weight show significant accuracy differences? Say 2 grains different.

Old ASC magazine max was 2.300. Most cartridges show two accuracy nodes and some three. Often the third is s tiny bit over MAX but reloading manuals are not carved in stone. They are exceeded by many and on occasion many that do that are clueless and are better off never doing that. Charge weight variation? Do you mean TWO GRAINS 2.0, or TWO TENTHS 0.2? Rarely significant changes are seen. Ritch and I load in 0.3 grain steps on cartridges of this size. If we find a good one we will shoot 0.1 on either side. If course we reshoot the best ones for verification. If they look very good we may play with seating depth also. Greg

Thank you. Yes I ment 0.2 grains. I saw a good group show up at 28.3 grains 8208 with some horizontal stringing. I am thinking that I should then work with seating depth in order to bring that in. What I've see so far is a nice group at 26 grains and then again at 28.3. These are the 123 gr SST. I'm watching the brass for pressure signs. I still see some radious around the primers, no cratering, occasionally I see an ejector swipe, very subtle. The rifle is running fine, ejecting at 3:30 to 4:00. This is all new to me. My first AR build, my first AR rifle. I enjoy the way it handles and shoots. I'm new to reloading as well. I've just been through my first box of 123sst bullets. The challenges of precision shooting are interesting and fun. So many things to pay attention to. Not just the rifle and ammo but the stillness required to let the hardware perform.

28.3 is a bit stout. But doable. Yed horizontal can often be fixed with seating depth once you eliminate shooting technique failure. Another good bullet is the Nosler Competition. They are cheap from Shooters Pro Shop at times.
