Shooting 85 Gr Sierra’s out of my BHW 6x6.8. Looks like most are trying to seat out to max mag length around 2.290” but my barrel is cut to where the bullet engages the lands at 2.220”. With not a lot of neck tension I can load out to 2.280 - 2.290” but when the bolt closes it sets them back into the case to around 2.230”. Wondering why anyone would load over 2.220” since it just gets pushed back into the case or with tight neck tension risk getting a bullet stuck in the lands? On the other hand, is my barrel just cut differently from others? I would much rather load these out to my mag length of 2.290 but just doesn’t make any sense.
Looking for others thoughts. Thanks!

I know most don’t run the 85 Sierra HPBT so I tested out the max length in my barrel with the Hornady 87 HPBT which I think many more use. I am able to seat them at 2.265” to the lands. Still much shorter than I thought it would be at around 2.280 - 2.290. If this is normal for these BHW barrels, the longer mags may not be necessary. Can’t figure out if my barrel is just cut short or if everyone has the same length.

The Sierra 85 is one that hits right on where you are at in the 2.225 range. You need to look at the bullet shape. The 85 is a short blunt tip bullet and these will ALWAYS hit much faster than the long pointy ones like an 87 or 97. The Nosler BT at 50 and 70 grains are very long as an good example of that. The chamber you have is a small amount shorter but as it is a wildcat we all load to the chamber. One cannot make assumptions on what length "should" be right based on someone else's data. I shoot some bullets out to 2.345 or so in my guns single shot in matches BTW. Greg
