Howdy everyone, been awhile since i've been here but I am having a problem with my latest build. when i slide the gas block on the barrel, it stops 1 1/2" short of where its supposed to go. it stops sliding and is too tight to try and go any further I have a 18" BHW custom bull barrel with target crown and straight flutes at the end of the barrel and a Wilson Combat .936 gas block
how do you know if the barrels is too big, or if the gas block is too small? I tried 2 different brands of gas blocks and they both stopped at the same place. Now I don't know what to do? anyone else ever run into this problem? I tried searching before posting but could not find this subject anywhere on the board

I tried searching before posting but could not find this subject anywhere on the board First thing to do is measure the GB journal and see if it gets bigger at the chamber/back end. Then do the same on the GB and see if it gets smaller at the muzzle end. That should narrow down what is what. If one is tapered and one is same same end to end you can alter one. If it's the barrel call them and send it for adjustment of the over-sized area. From your description I thing it is. You could take some hardware cloth and shoe polish/buff the large area but that might take a bit of time. You might also lightly go in and clean up the inside of the GB to open it up just a tad to fit it to the tube. One last thing ...REMOVE ALL SCREWS from the GB. I've seen them hung up before and that's all it was. Greg

Hi GLSHOOTER Thanks for the info. I need to get some digital calipers so i can measure those. I did check the screws before putting it on, so i know they weren't the problem, and even removed them, for the 2nd try. After trying 2 different gas blocks and seeing them stop in the same place, had me leaning it was the barrel. but i really wanted it to be the gas block, because wilson combat is 40 miles away and no shipping back and forth. I'll make some measurements and will find out as soon as i can go get a caliper. Thanks so much for your help You helped me quite a bit on my 1st AR a few years ago too. and everyone likes my 18" BHW Barrel, the build im doing now is for a former neighbor who got to shoot my AR just before moving back to n.c. and now he wants one too. so I am building it for him. and it has to have a BHW barrel! ... it was his only request. and recently I was at Mid America Munitions, in neosho mo. and one of the guys showed me his ar and I was surprised to see a BHW barrel on it. these guys are smarter than i thought to have a BHW barrel and that guy loves his BHW barrel. he was trying to tell me how good it was before he found out I have a BHW barrel too and for longer than him. Thanks for the reply, glad to see your still here with expert advise!

Update.... The Barrel was Perfect...!! it was the wilson combat gas block that was the problem. it seems that no one at wilson thought to make inner diameter slightly bigger when they started to melonite them, and that thin coating is what was making it not fit on the barrel. After this last build, I don't think that highly of Wilson Combat and Black Rain Ordnance anymore, and probably wont use them much anymore. Im lucky to live close by as it took four trips there to get it right. I went to break in the Barrel 2 weekends ago, and discovered it would not fire, so I took it to a gunsmith and found out the bolt was not milled out deep enough so he replaced it and I have another part to return. but it works now and shoots great. It was a miserable day at the range with strong winds and a hundred yards of mud to walk thru to set my target, but it was worth it to finally get it working and properly broken in. I can't wait to give it to my former neighbor, he is going to love this rifle. and I expect his shooting buddies in north carolina will be wanting BHW Barrels when they try his out.
