I just got a Hornady overall length tool. I just checked my jump to the lands on my 308AR barrel for 2 different bullets. One was the 168grain Sierra Matchking and the other was a Sierra 150 grain soft point. I am relatively new to trying to shoot little tiny groups. I was a law enforcement officer and firearms instructor for many years so my main interest was in handguns. If my rifles could shoot minute of deer I was happy. Since retirement I have become interested in more accurate rifles. Now back to the reason for this post. Loading the 168 grain Matchking to max length of 2.800" I get a jump to the lands of .070". With the 150 grain soft point I get a jump of .130. This bullet is almost out of the case when it hits the rifling. Is this normal for the BHW polygonal rifled barrels? I have read that should be .020-.030 for best accuracy. Thanks in advance for your replies.
P.S. Greg if you see this post this is the same rifle about which we were discussing a possible headspace issue.
P.S.S. I just checked The OAL in one of my FN/FAL rifles. With the 168 grain Matchking I would get a .004" jump to the lands if I loaded it to the max length of 2.800. With the 150 grain soft point I would get a .030" jump. This seems what it should be to me.

This seems what it should be to me. Depends on what reamer is used. I believe Carl designed this one but am not certain. I haven't measured the DTL on a BHW 308 yet. I might look at mine tomorrow in my AR10 BHW tube. I do know that I've shot some commercial 308 rifles that had about as much jump as you are describing in the BHW barrels. I have had terrible luck using the Hornady tool on the BHW barrels across the board and finally just quit using it and moved to the Sinclair set up. The poly barrels just don't seem to want to give resistance when you slide the bullet in them. How does it shoot? Greg

Having my morning coffee and thinking this over. You have a lot of concerns on this barrels and rather than fight the Dragon of Uncertainty, that we all get at times, I recommend you contact BHW and chat with them. That approach might be the best one to eliminate the what if's and the why is it's.
BHW/CRA doesn't monitor this board at all so they will not be aware of your concerns unless you talk them directly. Keep us posted on how it goes.
