I would like to try Parker 300gr match/hunter bullets in my 450 bushmaster Ruger American ranch rifle but would wind up with an o.a.l. of 2.550 which will fit in magazine but is over the limit of 2.260. Does anyone know of a similarly shaped bullet that isn't as long ?

This is a bolt gun right? Unless the magazine is that short there would be no reason to load to 2.260. How did you arrive at that COL? If you are relying on the placement of the canneleur, if it has one, just forget about that groove and seat long enough to make sure you have the ogive above the case mouth. Adjust load levels as needed
Another excellent choice is the 450 Bushmaster Forum out on the Internet.

FROM SWATMAG.COM This implies to me you could load long. I can laod mine to 2.316 in an ASC magazine. Also I wonder if a bit of a jump would really be an issue for you.
Due to the diameter of the cartridge, magazine capacity is three rounds for a total on-board capacity of four rounds. The tip of the cartridge is approximately ½ inch from the front of the magazine, but due to the generous length of the feed lips—1¾ inches—the cartridge stays in place until it is guided smoothly onto the feed ramp.

Yes it is a bolt gun. Reloading manual states a 2.260 max length. A dummy cartridge loaded to 2.555 feeds smoothly thru action. My worry is would this create excess pressure.

There is a break over point on this issue. As you load over 2.260 the pressure will DECREASE up until you get very close to the lands. Think of a bell curve on pressure only as it gets longer the curve goes down and not up slowly climbing back up to the original pressure of the 2.260 level and then going higher. First off you need to determine the distance to the lands of your bullet in that chamber. If you find at your LONGEST loading you are around 0.015 to 0.020 off the lands you have plenty of room. Anything over 0.010 off does not give me much concern Methods to find the lands are all over the net but we use the Sinclair Distance To Lands Tool to get it dead nuts accurate. The Hornady tool works OK too but across the board the Sinclair is much faster and repeatable and does not need special threaded cases like the Hornady as you use a case fired from YOUR chamber. We often load long to drop pressure and allow us to not compress the powder charge when loading. We also will use the extra capacity to add powder in many loads. SAAMI on 223 and many other AR based doable cases is 2.260 and we routinely load to 2.314 or, single shot, far longer to get maximum accuracy and reliability on the rifles we shoot. Be aware though that in a 30 caliber a 110 RN may well be 0.100 shorter in MAX COL so you have to know how THAT bullet fits into THAT chamber. Greg
