I originally created this more as a learning tool for not only myself, but our new hires. When I started here I knew nothing about firearms other than they go BANG! Nor was I aware that a magazine and a clip are not the same thing. And it was kind of intimidating to be around a shop full of people that lived and breathed firearms. Simply put, there was no guidebook put in front of me so I had to ask a lot of questions and figure it out myself. This is a guide that I am using to teach our new hires the production shorthand we use for our labels and packing slips, How to measure our barrels and recognize some of the many profiles we offer. (Anyone who has received a barrel form us, this may help decipher your packing slip!) Some may find this interesting, some may find the information redundant. But for any noobs out there, like myself, this may be a good place to start.

That is a great learning tool. An overview of the profiles as a quick reference is really nice so everyone can SEE the differences.

Nice one! I've been going all over the place looking up all sorts of questions I have and this helps a great deal. Nice work on the layout as well. You should expand and make it a series of infographics. :-)

That would make a great poster in my reloading room. Do you have a high resolution PDF?

This is great information for someone like me who is new to the AR world. I wish there was information like this for each component of the rifle. Thanks much.

The ATF measures a barrel by closing the bolt and inserting a dowel down the bore until it stops on the bolt face. The legal measure is from the muzzle to closed bolt face, if you are ever unfortunate enough to have to prove legal compliance. Barrel extension to muzzle minus 1/2" might not yield exactly the same measurement. Besides, a dowel makes a very nice visual aid for the judge or jury.
Important to know before you cut.

What is the major difference between match grade and standard profile in the 16 inch 6.8 SPC barrel? Thanks

What is the major difference between match grade and standard profile in the 16 inch 6.8 SPC barrel? Thanks I believe it is the profile. Standard Profile is 0.88" dia under handguard & 0.73" dia in front of gas block. The Match Grade Bull Profile is 0.97" dia under handguard & 0.92" in front of gas block. I do not see a 16" Match on BHW site; however, I do see it on Tactical Ammunition's site so it is *likely* available direct as well. Best to confirm that with BHW though & not take my semi-educated guess as a definite. It looks like I am in a similar situation as you though trying to decide on barrel specifics though I am set on the 264 LBC (no disrespect meant towards the 6.8, just different desires). It's tough to decide though as ALL the choices seem to have their merits, at least for me. Wish I could afford TWO barrels (or more). Hope this was helpful, -Mike

Mike
Thanks for your input and no disrespect taken. There are many choices because their is that many size options and applications. That is makes it so much fun. Keep me informed as you move forward as I am still trying to learn a lot about ARs.

They are ALL match grade when you get down to it. The barrels are all rifled and chambered side by side. No one is setting their examining each tube picking the "best of the best"
A BHW be it a LW, an M4,an H-bar or a bull are all going to shoot well. They might not handle a huge volume because of heat etc. but in reality as long as you aren't doing mag dumps these barrels are all capable of sub-MOA groups. You don't even have to ask me how I know that one.
