Hi all, I'm considering a BHW barrel in 6.5 Grendel for my new AR build and I'm having trouble deciding between an 18" and 20" barrel.
This build is intended to be an intermediate-long range(400-800 yds in my case) target gun, and pull double duty as a hunting rig (deer and pigs, maximum engagement about 250 yards). I've done some research and I feel that the Grendel is more than up to this task, and certainly better suited for hunting than the 5.56.
So for that purpose, which barrel length would be better suited?
Thanks!

If you intend on shooting past 500 yards you will need all the barrel length you feel comfortable with. If you feel that is a 20" barrel then go with the 20" The difference in velocity between a 20 and an 18 won't be fully realized until you reach about 500 yards. Even then the problem is not elevation. We can figure the elevation by using a range finder and adjusting for it. The major problem is the wind. If you loose 100 FPS because of barrel length, the windage correction at 800 yards could be as much as 12 inches. In short, velocity gives you an edge on the windage at long range.

I have to second what Ritch says. I've been shooting the 6X45 and the 6X68 at 500 yards in matches recently and while the BHW barrels give you free velocity all you can get is never enough!! The static range will let you dial in for a given load once you get your dope but at the unknown range in the game fields it is always nice to have a flat shooting round to allow for point blank zero at a reasonable distance. I know without that speed my 204 and 223's would not do so well out there on the long PD's that are just peaking at you from the hole!! Also the faster it gets there the less wind you have. I want all that lateral removed as much as I can on my rounds and for that reason I rarely go below 20 and prefer a 24 if I can get it. Just my thoughts on this one. Greg

Certainly these guys are the experts on the prostaff, and I agree with them completely that the longer barrel is necessary at longer ranges.
I have a 24" heavy barrel .264LBC for PD's and I can assure you it is deadly way out there past the distances you are thinking of. Also, I have a 20" LTR barrel in .264LBC for deer and hogs and have no problems reaching out to 500+ yards. Of course, the light barrel won't do that pounding all day long, but its wonderful for hunting and occasional long range stuff.
The 6.5 Grendel/.264LBC is designed to perform it's optimum velocity in barrels over 20".

And just in case you might want iron sights a longer sight radius helps though you'll need something other than a gas block sight base to get that length.

I went with a 20" standard profile and really like the way if feels/balances. Haven't shot it yet as I am waiting on a bolt.

I am in the same boat with you, waiting on a bolt from Tact Ammo. I am also in the wait period for the Gen II brake, they say another week or so on it! All is good though, my barrel (264 24") is expected to ship in a week or so!
