I recently bought a new Redding Competition Powder throw and thought I would post a few words about it.
I have been using a Hornady throw and it was ok with little trouble. Its been fairly accurate and consistent. But once I started working with powders like AA2015 and such I was getting big weight variances like 1.6gr differences so I decided I "Needed" something better for "safety" purposes or so I told the wife. She just rolled her eyes and said "whatever", which to me means "ok".
The first thing to know is the Reddng Comp throw is spendy....with stand it was near 2 C-notes. Pretty basic packaging and brain dead easy to set up because its basically all put together for you except you have to attach the handle and hopper. The stand is extra but does come with an edge table mount but I knew I would not want that as I hate stepping on spilt powder on the floor. If its going to have any grains get loose I would rather they be on the table.
Very smooth running both empty and with powders like AA2015. I dropped the baffle in and ran 40+ loads and weighed each one via a digital scale. It has a micrometer dial for adjustment.
The first 5 were a little off by 0.4grs at most but after that they were all 0.1gr off at most with most being dead on. The adjustment dial is very smooth and locks in place so load settings remain the same. The drop tube is well thought out and had no spillage when throwing charges. Its threaded so you could if you wanted, mount it on a press.
The only things I wish were better were a locking mount ring with a set screw to attach it to the powder stand. You just hand tighten it and I can see it working loose at times. I wish the powder stand was threaded but it not, its smooth and the throw just drops in the mount and then is secured with the ring on the bottom. A bigger powder hopper would be nice but in no way a need to have item.
All in all.....like most things of good quality......I should have bought one a long time ago.
