I know the OP has had his 1 in 8 for a while now. Considering this thread is a year old tomorrow. There's my dilemma. I want to build a .264 black rifle for long range shooting, which means 500 and out, since my little AR in 223, pushing out 69 SMKs, shoots under an MOA out to 600). That means I'll be shoving 138+ gr. bullets out. This thread has all members in violent agreement that only demonstration answers the twist/stability question, especially since poly rifling may introduce a variable into the classic twist equations. But nobody has posted in over a year, and as of the end of the posts, nobody had actually gone out and SHOT anything (at least that they posted about)!
C'mon, has nobody on this site actually shot a 260REM with heavy VLD bullets for groups? What happened? I think the issue is that few of the guys on here shoot AR10 based rifles. Fewer yet shoot long range with them. I have a 260 bolt gun barreled up but that is a differnt critter. Ritch has one on a Savage that shoots VERY well with those long pupies. I am stuck with the AR15 format and have been shooting the 243 LBC way out there and have not shot many VLD's yet. My 264 LBC is finally going to get some love but I will probably just shoot the 123 Noslers with the 0.510 BC as they are a tad cheaper. Now in my 260 I will be going more $$'s because I think it will certainly pay off for them with the increased case capacity when I finally get the 1000 yard stuff running. Greg

Greg Point well taken, Greg. I know it's a little strange to be going long-range with an AR-class rifle, but I really like all you can do with them, and frankly I like what the gas action does to spread out the recoil! Maybe I should have considered a bolt gun, but it's too late - I just ordered a lower, so the die is cast. I'm thinking more and more about just sticking with the 308 cartridge the gun was designed for.

I am kind of a salmon and would go for the sleeker puppies.. I would do the 260 or the 7-08. I believe David Tubb (No G. now) might have a book out on these guns or Zediker might address it in one of his newer ones I have not bought yet. Nothing wrong with the big gun shooting out there. They are the worst design in the world for precision work and with all the moving parts are the so demanding of perfect balance but they are fun.
I have been doing lots of 500 yard stuff but that is a duck shot with any of these except maybe a 6.8. I'll be tying the 6.5X6.8 at 1000 along with the 264 LBC and maybe the 6X6.8/243 LBC too. They hold matches within 10 miles of the house and a weekly practice so I can do it and not be getting my butt kicked officially.

I have ordered one in 1x9 twist . With it being polygonal riffling I figure there is a reason BHW sells that twist . I will try some 140 amax and see what they do . I have a 264lbc BHW barrel that shoots tiny groups with 123 amax . If not 140 I will go 123 I can't lose .

Ritch has been shooting it with 130 and 140 Bergers with great success. That being said those 123 Nosler/Hornady bullets at 0.510 BC aren't too shabby down range. Greg
