Hi Folks, New guy with a quick question. I am seriously considering an SPR type build with a 6x45 barrel. BHW has a couple of 18" barrels, one of which may have my name on it. I have to decide which gas system I want, mid or rifle.
Is there any advantage or problems with either in 6x45? I generally prefer the rifle gas length with an 18" barrel but want to make sure everything functions as it should.
This build will be on a rifle type lower with A2 recoil spring/buffer, etc.
Thanks Cliff

If you go mid length it will have clean lines because the gas block would be under the handgaurd. I have had both and like the looks of the mid length gas system.

Guess I better get some dies on the way.. ;D You will need to be careful when you combine a 18" bbl. with a rifle gas system...you may not be able to get enough port pressure to cycle the action properly... If you were using a 20" bbl. with a mid-gas system then your GTG. Good Luck.

I'd think BHW would test the configuration to make sure it works. Another question, will the typical 1/2x28 (5.56) A2 flash suppressor have enough clearance for a .243 bullet? Thanks! Cliff

Well, in 6x45 it seems the rifle length gas system with an 18" barrel can be problematic. I was having constant functioning problems with various loads which seemed to be related to being under gassed.
Opening the gas port a few thousandths fixed the problem and the gun seems to run fine.
Time to start working on accuracy.

Good thing you were able to open-up the gasport enough to get it to cycle...the maximum you can normally open-up the gasport to is .125" on the barrel w/o creating other Issues... The 6x45mm is a nice wildcat to work with and is easy on the budget with load data and dies that are easy to find... Good luck with It.

From the factory the gas port was .102". My next drill size was .109". That was enough.

I've been eyeing the same barrel you got. I've heard of the problems with cycling as well when the gas ports are to closer to the muzzle.
If it is an easy fix, I might give it a try.

I too was having problems using the 18" barrel with rifle length gas system. I bought several different sizes of reamers and started opening the hole up a little at a time. Right now I cannot remember what size I ended up using, but I think it was .110. The 6x45 is an excellent round and very accurate plus it is legal for deer hunting here in Kansas.
