Hey there guys! I'm new to the forum, but I just came home to a new BHW barrel on my doorstep and I figured I should join the community.
First things first, the wait time was much shorter than I had anticipated. I ordered it beginning of Oct. and received it one week into November. I opened it up and it looks beautiful! ;D Way to go Black Hole Weaponry Staff!
Second, this is my first AR build, and my project is nearing completion. All that is left to install is the barrel, gas tube & block, handguard, and muzzle brake. Quick question to all of you that have done more of this than me. How tight of a fit should the barrel have with the upper receiver? Mine is currently very very tight, and I'm thinking I'm gonna have to throw the barrel in the freezer and the upper into some boiling water to get it started. Any thoughts on this? Any advice with this final installation step will be much appreciated!
Well, if all goes well with that installation, I should have it done and out to the range this weekend!

There are several ways to get your upper fitted to your receiver. The first thing would be to polish the barrel extension with a Scotch-bright. If it is still tight work the Scotch-bright into the upper. Go slowly you want a snug fit but not loose. This will usually take care of the problem.

Hot and cold are great at times but when you start doing it to AR uppers you may well be in a stress induced situation once you get it in. Later on close inspection you may well see a crack that develops when the upper cools down and the barrel expands. They call that worse than Good'en tight!!

Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I'm new to this and I don't want to mess anything up (I know it's inevitable to make some mistakes ). For polishing the barrel extension, what scotch bright pad do you recommend? Green, red, grey? Also, just so you guys know what I'm working with here, my barrel currently is only able to slide in about 1/8" into the upper receiver before it's too stuck to go further.

I have been using the green Scotch-bright. Polish the barrel extension and then the inside of the receiver. Check for fit as you go.

I used some calipers to measure my inner diameter of the upper and the diameter of the barrel extension and the numbers aren't looking good Upper receiver: .995 Barrel extension: .999-1.000 Will the scotch bright take care of this?

The upper should be right on 1.000. Your choice is be gutsy and use emery cloth and open it up and you may get the finish enough off to handle it OR call the supplier and tell him your upper is out of SPEC. Greg PS: I would do the latter way before the former.

Got it all put together! ;D Just used a little scotch bright and physics (heating and cooling). I checked for any crack development and it looks solid. That barrel isn't going anywhere! This being my first stainless steel barrel I was curious about what cleaning procedures any of you guys use to maintain your BHW barrel. In the past I have always had an issue with my cleaning procedure. Everything I've read has told me to run solvent, brush, and then patches until they come out clean. However, I will run countless patches down the barrel and they always come back out with fouling on them. Is this normal? I will clean for about an hour before I finally give up and just light oil coat and store it. Another issue is that when I put patches in the slotted jig, it seems like there isn't much contact friction between the patch and the barrel. Doesn't seem like it will work very well in getting carbon out of the grooves To remedy this I'll try to throw two patches in the jig, and then the jig gets stuck. Should I use oversized patches or just the ones recommended for my caliber? Finally, what sort of cleaning kits do you use? For my first ar build I purchased the OTIS ar/msr cleaning kit with hopes that the memory flex cable will keep me from scratching up my barrel. The only issue with this is that I have to pull patches through with the slotted tip, and I can't get a tight fitting patch on these. Any thoughts about this kit? Lot's of questions here, but as an uneducated newbie, I'd appreciate any of your guys responses!

Get a Stoney Point bore guide for the AR15. Get a 36" or 40" DEWEY coated cleaning rod. Get the right size recommended patches and spear with the jag, THROW THOSE SLOTTED THINGS AWAY, well, use them to clean the chamber with a 45 ACP patch but not the bore. Run a few patches down the bore after it soaks about 15 minutes. Repeat X1 and you are done. God luck finding any copper in that bore. It just doesn't happen on the BHW barrels I have shot. A Bore Snake is handy to have out in the field or the Otis if you get junk in the bore but it is not, IMHO, a substitute for the real deal of a rod and bore guide. If I use non-Gunslick I will use Butches Bore Shine or Shooters Choice. If I want to mine for the non-existent copper I use Sweets. Greg
