I think it is time that we start a thread for everyone who is building a rife to hunt hogs.

Since this was my idea, I will start. I ordered a Black Hole Weaponry barrel in mid January as I am interested in building my first AR. I bought a 16" 6.8 Spec II Light Profile Mid Length Gas System .750 Gas Block - 1x11 Twist barrel. I am expecting the barrel to ship any day now so that my build can start. I am using Lone Star Armory in Texas to do my build and the rifle will be used to hunt hogs in Texas. I have described some of this in other threads.
I wanted to start a thread here on rifles for hog hunting and hog hunting in general. So share your ideas and experiences.

I guess this wasn't a good idea.

I guess this wasn't a good idea. Maybe guys don't build specific for hogs much. I don't hunt them, there aren't any around here, but if I did I'd just grab any one of four or five rifles and a good non-varmint bullet and commence to lay siege to them. A 6X6.8 with a 90 grain GK would certainly bring home the bacon. Greg

I am not really that sensitive. I have seen a little about hogs on the forum. Things have been so quite, I thought I would just stir things up a bit. My last hog I shot in Texas in March.

Hi HogWild - Nice pig ! I have been hunting Texas Feral Hog for the last few years on what we used to call a Deer lease. I have chased after them with 308, 270, 7.62x39, 223 and more. When I got my BHW 6x45mm AR it came to me used and all I knew of it was that I could shoot heavier bullets on the same AR15 format lower and 223 bolt. I initially loaded up 62 gr Barnes varmint grenades for coons and the like and 80 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips for the hogs. I came to find that the Barnes didn't fragment quite like the advertising shows and the 80gr BTs , twice mind you, failed to bring down 130 lb class pigs when hit in the neck/upper torso. See below video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_D66Qra-FgAnyhow I ditched the Barnes and Nosler loads and went to Speer Deepcurls on another whim. So far the one pig I shot with them didn't like it, at all ;D I will use this gun on Deer in the TX Panhandle this coming season. If the deer is out of range or larger than I would like to take with the 80gr bullet I will go to my other hog/deer gun (6.5 Creedmoor) which isn't a BHW barrel. Take care, BB

Nice Pig, I'm about to start going out hunting pigs now that all the corn fields that have been planted at my lease are bringing tons of hogs in. Waiting on a BHW 20 inch bull barrel in 6.8 Spc that I ordered the beginning of Feb. Probably a few more weeks

Where are you guys hunting? While I live in Washington, I own 42 acres of timber as part of a larger tract near Clarksville Texas. I shot a couple of hogs while I was there in Feb and March. I shot them with a 308 bolt action under a feeder light. I am now building the 6.8 SPC. I had trouble killing some other hogs with 150 gr Barnes TTSX ammo with them running off to die in the timber somewhere. Now that I am moving to 6.8 SPC II and planning on using Barnes 95 TTSX so ideas for best hog bullet particularly for the 6.8 SPC would be appreciated.

The 95gr TTSX and the 110gr Accubonds are the go to rounds for the 6.8, with the 110gr Sierra pro-hunters and 115gr Federal Fusion being a good economy bullets. The Federal round is only coming as loaded ammo at the moment, look for it in your local Walmart!

I got lucky this weekend while taking a break from setting up some new blinds and feeders at my hunting lease. Decided to take the wife on a evening hunt Saturday evening and right before we were about to give up this big ol'boy came rolling up to the feeder. I barely had enough time once he got to the feeder to take a shot while I could still see him. Hit him right between the eyes and I watched him roll over. Yet by the time time we got down from the blind and over to the feeder we could not find him in the tall grass and darkness. When to go get a couple of buddies who joined my wife in questioning my confidence in the shot to help find him. Got back an hour later to find him right under the feeder two thirds sunk into a big pig wallow under the feeder. Ended up as a 210 lb razorback that I found two different old abscesses with old bullet fragments inside. Will hopefully get to butchering him this evening after work. Attachments:

Way to go and congratulations. They are hard to kill and difficult to find in the dark. Nothing like a good head shot. What did you shoot him with?

Thanks, I shot him with a 16'' Bushmaster 5.56 that I've made trigger and full float quad rail upgrades to. Still waiting on a 20'' 6.8 barrel from BHW to start a second upper.

Good for you. I am in the process of building a hog gun too. It is also a 6.8 SPC. It is a BHW 16 inch barrel that was delivered to me a couple of weeks ago. I am having a person in Texas build it for me and am currently waiting on the receivers and bolt carrier group. He has all the rest of the parts. I should have it by mid summer.
What part of the country did you shoot your hog in?
