I am doing a build on an AR15 for general, target, hogs an varmints. I am looking at a mid length barrel. What are the pros and cons of a 18 vs 16 inch barrel.

I would venture to guess we are talking about a 5.56? The only advantage you get from running a longer barrel is velocity. If you use a muzzle device on a 16" barrel and go target crown on an 18 you will have the same overall length and gain the benefit of 2 more inches of barrel. You will also save yourself the cost of the muzzle attachment.

Also remember that a muzzle device adds greatly to muzzle blast. I use 'em in my run and gun match guns but not on my casual shooting or side by side competition guns.

If you are hunting hogs and varmints at night, you might want to go with a flash suppresser.
