While shooting yesterday I felt inadequate to the task. My 700 Remington .243win now routinely gives 100 in the neighborhood of 0.250" center to center when I do my part from the bench with a $70.00 front rest and rabbit ear bag in the back. If I blow a group with a flinch, the 6th round will find the original hole with out any effort. this thing, AR shot the first 2 rounds to a 60-80% overlap on 4 consecutive groups and never let me close the deal. Any suggestions. After a year and change of struggling with a new bow I went back to a checklist and found that I cold still shoot (8" group at 60yds went to 2" at 60yds); I do not know what to put on my list for the AR.
Thanks Paul

Are you shooting free recoil with the AR? They seem to disintegrate groups quickly if you try to use the pistol grip and try to steer them. It takes patience up the kazoo to shoot these things for good groups. No need to ask me how I know that.

I am not a competition shooter but I am willing to learn to gone my skills. Brian

When shooting on the bench I try to pull the gun to my shoulder I adjust L,R by moving the rear bag elevation is by screwing the front up or down once locked it is by pinching the rear bag.

Perhaps Ritch will chime in on free recoil. A book called Competition Reloading from Sinclair taught me a ton on bench technique and about 5,000 rounds helped some.

Google. A very interesting tool. Next time I will use it before I ask about a technique. I am sure there are many different theories of what is the best way, but for now I know for sure what you mean.

I am a meer shadow to those guys but even this old dog can learn from them. Greg

The specific term did not ring a bell; however I posses a 7mmRem mag that departed the rest and when some one suggested this years ago. I suspect the result will be less violent with a portly AR and a small cartridge that barely heats the barrel. Props to lkrbuilder13 for goading me into checking it out. to be honest I have not thought a lot about bench technique as I use it to decide on loads and confirm ballistics never to compete. Being ever the tinkerer the ace stock is going to get square to the but plate extension to ease the rear bag positioning. Gotta go with gimicks the problem could not be me.
Thanks All

Thanks All Paul I picked up the 'bag rider" set up just for these issues as they allow all the tricks in F-Class. Not real cheap but a great idea. You can look them up on the 6MM BR site under the 20 Practical article. As for a 7 Mag in free recoil there are limitatins to every technique. In the Hunter Class in Benchrest they will do more mahandling of the guns as a 30 caliber will kick your tail over a day of shooting if you don't control it. I spent a solid week working up loads on a 223 700 Remington years ago shooting 5 hours a day. I learned how to do it and it helped on the AR later. I also know that when I shoot my 308 precison rilfes that I best get behind it or pay the price. One trick is that a Harris bipod wil help some what in that area. Greg

New Just in never before seen custom whittled bag rider + comparison photo The baby AR is an 18" barrel at the stock length I shoot it (head up nose on the charging handle. As to the custom bag rider I may even glue it if it helps. You all have a good week I start shift tonight. Paul
