Hi all,
I'm new to the forum and I'm looking to leave the 5.56 world into something better. After doing a lot of reading around I was drawn here for two wildcats that's got me intrigued: the 6x45 and the 6x68.
I really like the ease of converting to the 6x45 but I have a few questions to ask y'all..
I've been looking to see what the heaviest bullet to load in the 6x45 and I haven't seen many over 90gr due to the long ogives and seating issues. The Berger 95 classic hunter seems to fit the bill due to the short nose length (~.505"). Has anyone here had success running these mag length and with what kind of velocity?
Also it worth the extra cost to jump up to the 6x68 and are you able to run the heavies 95-100+?
I'm looking at getting a bhw 18" rlgs with an adj gb either way I go. This will be used as a hunting rig as our farm is infested with hogs, coyotes, and deer.
With all the options out there, one can find himself going in circles like myself lol.
Thanks for the help, Michael

Thanks for the help, Michael I would go with the 6X68. It is basically the magnum version of the 6X45. The 18" barrel will slow you down regardless of which chambering you chose. That being said the 6X68 will still have plenty of oomph to get the job done. In comparison you will get velocities comparable to a 22" 6X45 out of an 18" barreled 6X68. As for shooting the big bullets it will do it and do it quite well. I however would not go above a 90 grain bullet. The trade off in velocity verses energy is not worth it in my opinion. Stay 90 grains and below and keep the speed. You will still have plenty of energy to kill pretty much all the animals you mentioned. My son killed a pronghorn at 646 yards this fall with a 6X68. It's is a pretty impressive cartridge.

What kind of velocity could I expect with the Berger 95 Classic Hunter out of an 18" bbl?
Also, what powders would you recommend as a starting point and what size/type primer since there are two case offerings in 6.8 spc?
Since I live in Texas, having a temp stable powder would be nice since the weather here is like a roller coaster ride. LOL

LOL I am not where my data is but I would surmise about 2800 or so if my memeory serves me. Maybe Ritch can chime in on that. Go with SMALL PRIMER brass NOT any Remington LP stuff. SSA just put a bunch up and it is good stuff. H4895, 8208XBR RL15 are all stable. CFE 223 does not go crazy but will loose some speed if you are cooling off big time. Greg

After neck sizing down to 6mm, what is the case length suppose to measure?
Also, has anyone measured the case capacity of the SSA's in 6x68?
Thank y'all so much for the responses.

After sizing down to 6mm max case length is 1.686. The same as the parent case. This is a true, straight neck down wildcat. There are no other changes to the case. The case capacity with most lots of SSA brass is 35.6. There are a few lots with a little more, almost 36 grains of water.
