I am wonderingwhat the general thoughts are on the barrel length for the 308. was thinking 24" but that will make for a LOOONNNNGGG gun and if I end up hunting with it it would be pretty heavy too. Then I was thinking 20", but i am going to loose velocity. 16 and 18 is too short so those are out for my taste. I thought about being difficult and getting a 22" to be the compermise. just wondering what everyone thinks avout it in this platform. Thanks, Brian

Thanks, Brian I have an 18" and a 24" They both have there place. The 18 is loud, for a hunting rifle it works great, but for shot after shot range gun it is loud. The 24 is heavy but not excessively. It is easy to shoot and seems like half the noise. That being said I would go with the 20" barrel. For an all around length it will work perfectly. You are only talking about 50-70 FPS by going to the 20 over the 22 inch barrel. And with a black Hole barrel you will pick that up in barrel design from standard loadings.

thanks for the question i have been mulling over what length to get also. i have been wanting to build a ar10 platform rifle for a while now.
I was leaning toward the 20-22 myself.

I keep trying to tell myself that a 20 is good but for some reason 22" would make me feel good. Ritch, would it make a hill of beans difference at 800-1000 yards. I don't want another short range gun, I have enough of those already. I don't remember putting my hands on a long barrel lr-308 or comparable gun to know how much is out there to swing. Thanks Brian

Thanks Brian If you are looking at the 1000 mark go with a 24 Inch barrel. The extra velocity you will gain will mean a lot when you get way out there. If I were building a rifle for the soul purpose of long range I would go with a 260. It has the whole package if you go long. The 308 is running on empty at about 900. Yes it will make a difference. You simply can't get the velocity to get to 1000 from a short barrel. Run the calculations for yourself. You will be surprised at the numbers it turns up.

For the soul purpose being 1000 yards, no, there is only 1 range around here that I can hit that mark, but it would be nice to have the capabilities of it. I am leaning more towards the 24, we all know that is what Greg would do. Brian

A 260 will go past 1000 with room to spare.

I just ordered a 20 inch myself. I hope I did the right thing. Been debating the length so much. I considered 22 as well for the distance, accuracy, and sound... but it is so long and I will be hunting with it. I thought 18, but is that too short for any distance? Oh well I hope I made the right decision considering I still have to add a compensater.

A 20" should do fine in the hunting world. I know the accuracy will be there for you

I was wondering... has anyone ever ordered a 19 inch? I mean why not right? It is a custom barrel. Then with a compensator it would be 21 inches long. I know that one inch is nitpicking, but it would be nice just to be different and as a compromise. I just hate the sight of a barrel extending too far from the hand guard, and i have a MKM Maten so the 15 inch was the longest option available.

BHW has been known to accommodate a customer a time or two. From my personal knowledge data bank I've never heard of a 19" barrel. I'm sure somewhere or sometime it's been done. Greg

I emailed them. No answer? They have done some 19" tubes. Maybe a phone call would be faster. I just call if I have a question.. Greg
