I have a new 6x45 AR build. 20" barrel with rifle-length gas and target crown. Just so you know, it has an Aero upper, Spikes lower, SSA-E trigger, Fortis REV handguard and cheap BCG. I now have about 75 rounds through it. Flawless operation.
I built this upper in 6x45 in order to hunt deer legally with it here in VA. My son shot a nice doe with it a few days after this past Christmas.
I'm using BLC2 powder because I have a few pounds of it and I have good luck with my 5.56/.233 loadings with 53-55gr bullets. I would be happy if I could get good results from this powder but am not opposed to other powders.
My loadings so far:
Bullet: 85gr Hornady Interbond
Powder: BLC2 (various loadings)
The 85 grain bullets shoot a 6" pattern at 50 yards. None of the loadings seem better than others...
Bullet: 70gr Nosler Solid-Base hollow points (old bullets)
Powder: BLC2 (various loadings-27.5-29.5gr.)
Bullet: 70gr Hornady SXSP (a soft-pointed bullet made before the V-Max came out)
Powder: BLC2 (various loadings 27.5-29.5gr.)
BOTH of these lighter bullets shoot MUCH better! One loading, 27.5 grains of BLC2 with the 70 gr Nosler Solid-Base bullet shot a 1/2" group at 50 yards. (It was windy this morning so I didn't shoot longer yardages.)
I know my first outing gives me limited results but it does seem that the lighter bullets perform better in my barrel with this powder.
Perhaps a different powder would give better results when shooting the heavier, 85gr bullets. More testing to come.
Many of the bullets offered today in 6mm for deer are generally 85gr in size and heavier. I hope to develop a load using heavier bullets!
