More stupidity from an A30 newbie....I'll be using RCBS 30 Herrett dies...any better or worse than Hornady New Dimensions? With all my reloading experience, I should know the answer!!!!

Do the RCBS 30 Herrett dies come with a tapered sizing button? If not you will need purchase one. The Hornady dies come with the tapered sizing button.

I dont believe the shoulder should move. Having the gauge in place merely block the 30 Herrit dies from moving the shoulder. If you set up the dies like any other case it would bump the should back to oblivion. Correction from previous post and something I just learned. I was told that the gauge sat on the top of the shell holder but in fact it should be pressed thru till it seats on the base of the shell holder. It sure is a tight fit but it come out. Maybe useing a 308 shell holder would be better. I sized a once fired 30 and defiantly didnt look right. The neck wasn't sizing down far enough.

It would have to fit inside the shell holder if you want to get the sizing right. The thickness of the shell holders do vary. Also if you're running a progressive you wouldn't have a shell holder top to set it on that would be solid. Greg

There is a .015" difference between the A-30 gauge and the RCBS shell holder opening. No way it will press through. So I definitely need to take off some metal to make the A-30 gauge to work with my set up. Glenn

Can you post a picture of the gauge and the shell holder on how it should be set up. I'm a visual guy and need to see it before I can relate to what you're talking about. Thanks

Thanks I got mine filed, sanded, cursed down to size. Gave me the measurements you gave me Greg. Here you go cpct, This is how the A-30 gauge should fit in a shell holder. Thanks again Gentlemen, you really came through for me. Glenn

So you didn't do anything with the length, just the circumference of the end that sits in the shell holder. Makes sense now. You adjust the die down with the ram all the way up until the tool stops the die's progress, and wallah......you're ready to start sizing. Correct?
I wonder if, since I paid for my barrel, Black Hole will send me the gauge so I can get some sizing and loading done before the barrel gets here? I get all my reloading stuff in two weeks.

Yes, I needed to reduce the circumference for the gauge to sit in the shell holder properly. When setting up the die. Place the gauge in the shell holder. Extend the ram all the way up. Screw down die till it makes contact with the gauge. The gauges come with the barrel. I have two 6.8 SPC bolts, one Daniel Defense, one SAA. The SAA has a deeper bolt face by .0015". So you need to have the barrel/bolt combo to see if you need to make any fine adjustments. Glenn

They aren't sending out gauges early. That could cause real issues loading without your rifle components to use for actual fitting.
