What would barrel life be on a 17-223 . I would want to shoot 25 grain bullets around 3900 and 20 grain bullets in the low 4's .

I have never heard of one being shot out. How many thousands have you shot in the last two years? Mine only has 500 down the tube. It is not my go to gun like one of my 20's or the 22X6.8. Greg

I have several rifles maybe a thousand trough my favorites . So you are right probably would last a really long time. I don't really need another one but they sure are fun. I have been debating a 17-223 or 20 practical a lot of my friends are getting 20's I was thinking about being different.

The 17-223 is kind of cool but given a choice it would be the 20 Practical until the cows came home then I'd switch to the 22X6.8...LOL Greg

I think my 17-223 is shot out. Groups have gotten inconsistent and big. I'm going to try to figure a round count just by figuring how many bullets I've gone through.

I'm pretty sure I've gone through 1100 or so 20 gr zmax, 100 25 gr hp, maybe 200 20 gr ms, and 40 or 50 nosler varmageddons.
So around 1500? Does that seem about right?
Not sure if I'm going to do another one, or go with a 20 of some sort. This was a favorite, but I thought I'd get at least 2k out of it.

Sometimes a really in-depth cleaning is helpful. Sweets comes in handy here. Lots of "shot out" 17 caliber rifles have been raised from the dead by their new owners.

I thought that might be the case. Some scrubbing with copper solvent didn't get much out, then used jb bore paste and bore bright to polish and remove any carbon rings that might be there. The first group looked like I was back on track but subsequent ones were as bad as before. Without a bore scope it's just a shot in the dark what's up.

You might try the Gunslick Foaming Bore Cleaner. I believe in getting them squeaky clean after about 100 rounds. Those 17's will take three or four applications but you can leave it in overnight and let it soak. Greg
