Hello All Another 1st. time builder without any experience, building my 1st AR. I like to tell shooters I live between Wilson Combat and Black Rain Ordnance because no one has heard of my little town just north of the of Mo/Ar. state line, for the others I say I live near Branson Mo. 6 Months ago I decided I could buy a cheap AR and slowly replace the parts I didn't like, OR just buy the parts I wanted and start building. I decided to build! and for the last 6 months have been scouring the net looking for good deals on parts and slowly buying a piece at a time. And now I only need a Barrel and a hand guard. I started with a Black Rain Lower and learned they use Black Hole Barrels, so I started learning more about them. and like what I have read about them. they are out of my price range, but so has every other part I have bought so far. and early on in my build I realized I would rather wait and get good quality over (unknown to me) "cheap" parts.
and now that I am looking for a BHW barrel..... nobody has them in stock. the closer to finishing I get, the harder it is to resist getting something cheaper right now. but don't want to end up with a cheap barrel after being so patient up until now and end up with the one part I didn't want to go cheap with... the barrel

Welcome to the forum. What barrel are you looking for? Black Hole may have it in stock. I would give them a call. It doesn't hurt to ask

welcome buhbang, i'm another newbie to the site but probably one of the older newbies. i had one rifle built up and shooting well and decided to go for another caliber, that's why i'm here. i'm looking at the 6x6.8 as that is different from the other calibers i have and it has my attention. what caliber are you looking at, anything specific? enjoy the forum!

Thanks all and I will be calling to see whats available. but still not sure if I should get the 18" or the 16" barrel, and I think I want a mid length for either of those . I will mostly be plinking and may do some varmint hunting with it, and I hope devildogandboy keeps us up to date on that 6.8 build, thats a build I also want to do after I finally get this one done! and I am 51 so here's to old dogs learning new tricks. I only know I want a BHW barrel, don't know which is best for me? I have been thinking an 18" for awhile but for no particular reason, and it might just depend on what they have in stock at the time that make my final decision. I was hit head on on the highway a few years ago and now have a artificial elbow on my left arm, which has limited range of motion and I cannot twist my wrist to hold a rifle anymore. Then I tried a friends AR with the forward grip and thats just what I need! I am (was) left handed and now shoot right handed with my 1911 and feel like the "pros" at the range must think im an idiot for only shooting one handed and that I don't know how to properly hold, or shoot my 45. but for a lefty I'm shooting right handed pretty good now and have tight groupings. with my AR I get to hold it like everyone else. And my friend who's AR I've been shooting the last couple of summers, is in for a big surprise as I haven't said a word to him about this. Not only will he be surprised.... he will be shocked to learn I built it myself. I am so close to finishing now and really looking forward to shooting this rifle

I tend to the 18" if only to decrease noise a little plus I want a bit more weight. AS a recommendation unless you like bright and shiny, I do, go with the blackening process. It wear great and the barrels seem to be shooting better with the shot peened surface for some reason.
That on handed shooting... Now for most guys that is a skill that has been forgotten. I personally love it in a match as I started out doing lots of that and a few thousand rounds down the tube get it down relatively well to learn. A couple seasons of Bullseye get the basics down. AT speed the adaptation to the off side is something that we all work out but it does get a lot easier if a guy will just dedicate a few afternoons.
Keep us posted as things develop.

Thanks everyone for all of your help & suggestions, I took your advice and bought a Barrel 1st. thing friday morning. I got an 14.7 " palmetto state barrel..............heehee.....just kidding! sorry couldn't resist. I got a blackened 18" standard profile 1-8 middy RTS Black Hole Weaponry Barrel ! It was in stock and ready to ship! now waiting for delivery. my budget has made every purchase painstakingly slow and a test of my patience, but I now see the light at the end of the tunnel and only need a hand guard to complete my 1st. build. and other than spending way more than planned, I have no regrets as I have a much better quality rifle than I thought I would end up with, and my 7 months of reading and researching and buying parts, is now about to pay off! with all of your help, and from what I've read from others in the same boat, I was able to buy this with confidence. Thanks Everyone whether you replied to my posts or just by asking the same questions I learned from on other posts Toddbuh
