What is your choice of caliber for longe range shooting with a AR15 platform rifle?

By long range target shooting if you mean 500 + I would currently use my 6X45's or the 25 WSSM that I have. If I were building one for that specific purpose I would look at the 6.5, the 260 or, for way out there, the 6.5X284 Norma.
For PD's any of the hot 20's will do well quite a ways out there. For deer size game it would have to be at least the 260 for my tastes. YMMV

The 260 are 6.5/284 wont work for your AR 15 needs, but the 243 LBC will.

Sorry I missed the AR15 platform limit. The LBC series would work OK.
I see the 25 WSSM is listed in the 308 platform but mine is based on n AR15 sized lower. The upper is totally different for the WSSM because of how fat the cartridge is though it will run at regular 223 cartridge length. The upper for the LBC cartridge series is a standard AR15 size.

We are making the wssm's in a more robust size, out of personal choice

So you are doing the WSSM's on a 308 lower then?

No all the wssm's and some other Wildcats we have in mind will use Carls new Magnum upper, but it will fit on a AR 15 Frame lower. It will have a few things different then anything out there now. I cant wait

OK. My WSSM upper is certainly more robust on mine. I was a bit confused. That is one big round to be cutting metal away on for a regular AR upper to handle. Plus the extension would have to be bigger to handle it.

Greg, What brand is your 25 WSSM? All the WSSM uppers I have seen are made with standard size receivers. The Magnum Upper Carl is coming out with is a Completely new design.

Greg, What brand is your 25 WSSM? All the WSSM uppers I have seen are made with standard size receivers. The Magnum Upper Carl is coming out with is a Completely new design. Mine is an OLY. Looking at it it APPEARS that the metal has been left thicker around the ejection port. Looking a the thickness from the bottom of the receiver up at the top of the ejection port you can see a definite increase in thickness based on how much further the bolt carrier is setting inside the port. The dust cover has been done away with and there are thicker areas in front and below the port where that would have been machined down. Looking at Carl's deign you can certainly see that it is being approached with strength being a major goal. That is one reason why I am drooling at the idea of getting one in my shooting paws. Greg

In a .223 lower, I'd pick the 6.5 Grendel/264 lbc, loaded with 123 gr A-Max or SMK's.
In a .308 lower, I'd pick a 260 Rem, and load 142 gr SMK or Berger 140 gr VLD bullets as hot as possible. The ability to use 308 brass necked down and the stock 308 bolt and mags outweighs (for me) some of the more exotic and expensive choices.
Just my $.02.....

I have one of each. I really like the 260 Rem.

+1 on both AR-15 & AR-10 Platforms...The 6.5mm/.264 Cal. just rocks...If/when the WSSM uppers are ready by BHW, I vote for a 6.5mm WSSM. Great bullets,High BC's,Low Recoil,Long Range Accuracy & High Velocity/Energy...What else can one need ?

I have a .260 in a Bolt gun and trying to decide between the 264lbc and 6.8. They both have their merits...........My local gun shop stocks 6.8 by several mfg and only one batch of 264 (6.5)
