I am in the process of wringing out the 458 SOCOM that has been setting in the corner of the safe patiently kicking the snot out of a lowly 204 Ruger. This project has been pushed way back thanks to its little brother the American 30. The big bore kind of acts as the balance to my addiction on the fast mover 20’s.
This one has a BTE gas block, 0.936, and the BHW KTB integral muzzle brake. I selected a BTE FF hand guard for this one. I’ve shot this one for function a few weeks ago with the UniMag, fed and ran flawless BTW, and was pleasantly surprised on the recoil.
The lower is one of mine I’ve used in 3Gun and shooting PD’s over the years. It has a Timney drop in 3 pounder. Enhancements are a Wilson oversized bolt release, a Magpul trigger guard and oversized safety. The ACE stock has had a 1” recoil pad added as a nod to the bad boy cartridge.
I am working up some super and sub-sonic loads for this with 325 FYX and 405 Remingtons. I didn’t have a good low powered scope so I pulled on off my 20 Practical for a temporary fix. Put together with the big 6.5X20 Vortex the rifle weighed in at 7.4 pounds. I will be changing to a 2X7 Vortex. The weight loss will be enough to bring it down to just barrel under a hair under seven pounds if I don’t breath hard on it.
This is the test ammunition that I put together. I’ll have to spin the seater plug on the Hornady set up to better match the bullet ogive. Ten each 325 FTX and 405 Remingtons. Sum total weight on the 20 rounds was just slightly over one pound of energy delivering goodness.
I’ll update as I run this one through its paces over the next few months.
