I go by Peabody. And I'm an upperholic. I have upperholism. And I'm not recovering. My addiction is only getting worse. I just placed an order for a 6x6.8 barrel from Ritch at RPG.
This will be my sixth AR build... the fourth I've built from scratch... though one of those was for my FIL. I guess that one would count as "codependent".
I started my path to addiction with odd calibers - the "red headed step calibers" of 5.45x39 and 7.62x39, if you will. Then I dabbled with the oh-so-abundant 5.56. But that was a bit "vanilla" for me. Then I moved on to 6.8 SPC II, which I call my hunting AR (medium game). But that wasn't enough. And along came 300 Blackout...
I felt it justified owning my 5.56 because I can convert the brass and "roll my own" like a real man. I found it to be "rationale". It was like putting chocolate syrup on my vanilla ice cream. And it tasted good. But after months of having my cravings under control, I ran into an old "interest"... 6.5 Grendel.
We danced when I was looking for a hunting AR. But the courtship ran afoul when the name calling and finger pointing between 6.5 G and 6.8 got ugly (it already was... I just didn't realize until I started paying attention). So the fears of broken bolts, lower pressure limits, hoop strength and feeding problems drove me to 6.8. And I was happy. Oh, but 6.5 G batted her pretty little eyes again. And procrastination set in. I was craving a new high...
Being that 6.5 G has an alter ego, 264 LBC, I began to revisit the issues of old, hoping they might be in the past. And hope that I might, I still had concerns with the price of ammo and brass, availability and... those issues from before. The only thing I couldn't shake was the need for something new.
I really like the 6.5s. They're sexy. I have an old Swedish Mauser. I love it. But a 6.5 upper that I could build from scratch... Oh, the temptation! More procrastination.
6.5x6.8?!? Whoa! That's like 6.5 G without the issues!!! Oh, that would be... What? COAL? Windowed mags?? Can't load 123 AMax easily?!? Maybe this isn't the 6.5 for me. And then I saw her little sister... 6x6.8. I've never had a wildcat before. And the 6 mm bullet weights would compliment 6.8 SPC nicely... Yeah, baby! Let's tango!!!
And that's what brings me here. I'm Peabody. I'm an upperholic. I'm not recovering. And I just laid the Benjamin's down for my first hit of high-speed wildcat...
