Hello guys, I have a Rem 700 (22-250) that I need to remove the barrel from so I can install my new BHW 1:8" 243 Win remage barrel. I have heard/read the factory Rem barrels are a bear to remove. Brownell's has the proper barrel vise and action wrench for about $300. Is there a cheaper, yet safe and effective, way to remove this sporter barrel?
Any local gunsmiths you'd recommend for this procedure? NE WA / Northern ID area.
Spending $300 in tools for one barrel job seems silly to me. I can get a new action for $150 more and keep the 22/250. It shoots decently, but I wanted a faster twist for heavier bullets. I also hunt both states and WA has a 6mm minimum caliber for big game..... OR scrap the 243 idea and just build my dream 7mm-300 WM?
Thanks

Any smith should be do it for a few bucks. Someone up there builds rifles. Call your local gun shop and I bet they will recommend one. Alternatively you can always get a referral from PacNor and then ship the action to them.
My barrel vice from Brownells was only about $50.00 or so. What does that action wrench tun? No way that I would drop $300.00 for such s limited use tool. You're going to need the vice anyway in the future.

That is a good combination right there and if I were doing a bunch would go that route. At my level I would pay a smith to pull the barrel. I would buy a DAVIDSON barrel vise and, WHEELER barrel nut wench. Total about eighty bucks. I could drive a long way for $200.00.

The wooden blocks worked well for me on about 4 different remingtons so far.I read some were on the enterwebs to use brown sugar between the barrel and blocks to help it from slipping. It worked every time like a charm. I never did try not using anything. They recommend Rosie as well but I had brown sugar and it worked so I used it.
