I've completed my LH AR 15 6.5 grendel build. I have a 20" bhw 1-9 twist barrel with 15" free float handguard. Everything was assembled per mil spec. I'm in the process of breaking in the barrel. Shoot 5 rounds then clean and so on for 50 rounds. I'm using cheap wolf ammo for the break in. My issue is that it shoots a group about the size of my hat at 100 yards. Is this typical while break in with cheap ammo?

Is this typical while break in with cheap ammo? If you had a very tiny hat that would be good but I doubt that. El Cheapo as in being steel cased ammo? I'd shoot some good factory ammo in it. Groups with it are routinely running sub-MOA. The steel stuff not so good. If that doesn't produce go through and make sure the mounts/rings are tight and the gas tube is not hitting. If those are GTG then I would contact BHW/CRA directly. I'm sure the good folks there will have all your answers for you. They do not monitor this board on a regular basis and that is why I refer you to them directly. Greg

I posted a reply to your reply but it didn't show up on here. It's possible that the gas tube could be touching the barrel nut slightly. It's a diamondhead 15" handguard with their proprietary barrel nut. I went over and finished the break in rounds and cleaning process. It may be shooting a little better. 4-5" groups. I'm going to try a few Hornady sst in a day or so. I won't be happy with anything greater than 1moa. I'd prefer less than that.

That really screws things up. Greg

Pretty normal for that ammo.

"It may be shooting a little better. 4-5" groups."
That's typical of what I've seen from my 264 LBC BHW. The only "positive" things I can say about the Wolf "Grendel" ammo is that it's available, it goes "bang" (most of the time), and it's inexpensive compared to the alternatives.

The scope I have on it now is a plain Jane Nikon 3x9 prostaff. I'm planning on a better optic with a bdc ranging reticle. I'm looking at a primary arms 4x14 acss Orion. I've got to see how close the reticle will match up with the factory Hornady 123 ammo. Anybody have the strelock pro app?
