I am considering re-barreling a Savage 12 223 to 17-223 and need some advice. I have been thinking 24" 1 in 9, but would like some opinions on the matter. It appears most of the bullets I will be able to get my hands on will be 20 or 25 grain. I've seen some discussion of 1 in 9 vs. 1 in 10 and would like someone with 17-223 experience to weigh in. What do you think is the best length and twist for the 17-223? Thank you!

Welcome to the board. 24" is good as is the 1:9. They are fun to shoot. Keep it clean.

Thanks Greg! One more question that Savage is a Model 12FV with the Savage factory heavy barrel. I'd like to go with as heavy as possible without having to do anything with the stock. Could you make a recomendation on the contour? Thank you!

2" straight out of the action then taper to 0.800 on the muzzle.

I just realized that the factory barrel is 26" and I like the feel of it as is. Is there any reason as far as you are concerned that 26" would be a bad idea vs 24" in 17-223 with 1 in 9 twist? Thank you!

Thank you! Nothing wrong with 26" at all. and the 1:9 is perfect. Minor speed gain in that one with the 17 but every little bit helps. Greg
