Hey everyone, new member here. I was planning on building a 18-20” 264 LBC, but just saw on the true sporting goods website that they have 16” and 14.5” barrels on sale for $140. What’s the consensus on short barrels chambered in 264lbc? Is it worth it? Or to much velocity loss? Would I be handicapping it’s capabilities by having the shorter barrel? Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks -Leo

Look at the 6.5 Grendel numbers for various lengths and you will be informed as to speeds. The BHW tubes will be a tad faster than published stuff because of the polygon rifling so that is a plus. The muzzle blast of a 16" is pretty stout and I would never build one under 18" just because of that. Plus the longer it is the faster it goes and I like fast. Greg

Thank you for the great response Greg, Very informative. Would the different barrel lengths (velocities) have a significant impact on which twist rate I would want? I’m planning on shooting 123s and lighter. For example: 16” need a 1/8, but at 20”+ a 1/9 would be fine or??? Thanks in advance -Leo

Twist rate doesn't effect velocities to speak of. A 1:9 will be fine on matter what the barrel length.

Thank you And what I meant to say was do I need a faster twist with a shorter Barrel do to lower velocity Thanks you for clearing that up

I've personally seen the same load chrono within 10 fps in 16", 18" and 20" barrels (not BHW barrels though). Even stranger is how often a 16" has chronoed a little faster than a 20". Talking to a lot of Grendel owners it seems this is pretty common and you're likely to safely max out 123's between 2450fps and a hair over 2500fps regardless of length between 14.5" and 20". Again, none of the barrels I've seen tested were BHW but it would appear that on average the Grendel is at the point of diminishing returns after 18".

I've never seen this in any centerfire cartridge. I don't think I'll be cutting my 24" tubes back anytime soon. Greg

Greg, how fast does your 24” push 123s?

I'll be able to give you those numbers tomorrow when I can get to my files.

Load data out there on the 18" tube is showing 2500 from an 18" tube in the 18/20" tubes from Western and Hornady. I talked with Ritch and he and I are boy getting right on 2700 with a 24" tube. I'm using CFE 223 with good results in mine. I don't own a short one as mine was headed for use in F-Class but I found the 243 LBC was by far a superior round for true 500-1000 yard range work.
