Its here!!! After a long wait, I finally got my hands on one of the new railed uppers. This has been in the development stages for quite some time. After several changes to the original design its now available for sale.
Right from the start I could tell I had something in my hands that will turn the AR world upside down. The finish is perfect. The workmanship is top notch. This is not a typical upper. It has a dust cover, but no forward assist or brass deflector. It reminds me of a smooth side upper only with a dust cover. The rails can only be seen when the upper is separated from the lower and looking from the rear of the upper. There are two rails machined into the receiver for the BCG to ride on. Making it a steal on steal contact. No more steal on aluminum with a phosphate or Teflon finish.
This upper was assembled as a 6X45. It is for one of the Pro staff of BHW, Kerry Carver. It all went together with out any problems what so ever. Once I had the upper completed, I pinned it to one of my lowers to check the function. I was in total amazement how smooth it was. It didn't have that gritty feel of a new unfired upper.
After I finished assembling everything I took this out to the range to test fire it. I thought of a comparison test I could do. I would fire a .223 and the 6X45 side by side. I was shooting a 58gr. Vmax out of the 6X45 and a 55gr. Vmax from the .223.
I shot the .223 first, just to get the feel of the recoil. When I switched to the 6X45 is when I realized what Carl had done. The first shot felt like a miss feed from an under charged load. I checked it and fired again. Same thing. It is so smooth it will catch you off guard. This is with out a doubt the smoothest upper I have ever fired.
My final impressions are, Carl hit a home run with the Railed uppers. Will I own one? I think that goes with out saying. Personally I will be changing all of my uppers out. And giving the folks at BHW a thumbs up for a job well done
