Well I have been working on a 300 blackout build for some time now, and finally got it running right. This build is going to be for dedicated sub sonic, suppressed work. I already use the 208 A max in my 300 win mag, they are relatively ineexpensive, accurate, and work so that is what I will shoot out of the blackout. Carl warned me that it is a finicky cartridge that would require fine tuning, but he would work with me to make it right. After a mix up with the vendor on the gas system lenghth (not BHW fault) I ended up with a mid length 16" barrel. Long story short, the mid lenghth system would not cycle the subsonic loads, even with a suppressor attached. A big thank you to Carl and Andy who spent hours working with me, trying EVERYTHING possible to make the gun run. In the end they swapped me for the same barrel, only in a carbine length gas system. Fine tune the gas port and we are off to the races! Now the rifle cycles and throws 208 gr 30 cal pills oh so quietly down range. As soon as I can find some time I will tune the load a bit more, do some accuracy testing, and drop some coyotes or other varmints with it!
Again, thank you Black Hole Weaponry. Customer service is top notch!
Aaron

Great to hear. Did you go with the 8.5 twist? Have any photos of how it shoots?
Unfortunately carbine is the longest gas system designed for the 7.62x35mm.

No accuracy testing yet, have banged 18" steel at 200 yds with a 3 foot hold over! Yes it is 1-8.5 twist. I only have a few pictures of the gun well upper, on my DPM lower that I Duracoated myself (5.56 upper matches) with a JP trigger. Nothing fancy, hope to put together a lower with Christmas presents Handguard is a Seekins BAR. Attachments:

That is one nice job you did on the lower, it looks Great! I am so very happy that you and Andy worked out all of the kinks with the 300 Blackout build, because now I want to build one. I hope you will share some of your secrets with me ;D. I found out yesterday that one of the cans I've been waiting for since September will work on this cartridge . So now I Must have 1.... Great build & I'm really curious how accurate it is? Eric

Nice looking rifle! I intend to use an adjustable gas system on mine when I finally have the new barrel. I've been doing a lot of research on the 300 Blackout round and systems and believe that may well be the way to go. My current rifle is a 16" barreled CMMG with a carbine length gas system. So far it has handled both subsonic and super sonic without a hiccup. I'm shooting factory Remington sub sonic and Atlanta Arms and Ammo super sonic rounds. I also have some CMMG produced rounds I have yet to try.

mlshooter,
Soooo.....have you had time to put this build through its paces? What type of accuracy are you seeing?
I've been wondering if how all these modern copper bullets work in the subsonic realm/if they are all so solid that they tend to ricochet real bad? How well does the 208 Amax perform at subsonic speeds (mushroom at all? Ricochet a lot?)? You have any experiance with any other bullets?
Thanks

Did the gas port have to be opened up?

I have a 300 Blackout barrel that I got several weeks ago from Andy. It has a carbine length gas system with an adjustable low profile gas block all on a LAR Grizzly upper. I had it on a Lower with a adjustable stock with the correct tube, spring and buffer, but I could never get it to run in semi auto and fully eject the brass, and, or load a new round.. So I purchased a New Ace non-folding stock with a lighter spring and a new buffer, but that didn't correct a darn thing!!! I am going to take the gas block off again today and once again make sure it is lined up with the hole in the barrel, but I did this before using my digital caliper and marking every point on the barrel before reinstalling the gas block the last time I did this?? Does anybody have any ideas?? I can shoot 110 Hornady V-Max or 220 Subsonic factory ammo while adjusting the gas block to the open and partially opened positions but it has only auto fed a few times since I've been fooling around with this thing!! Something kind of like this happened to me with my 264 LBC-AR, but the brass was stove piping when I fired it. I installed a heavier spring in the buffer tube and it worked fine after that, could that be what's wrong with the 300 Blackout, it has tried to eject the brass a few times, but it usually just stays in the chamber?
Any ideas? Eric

Any ideas? Eric Hey Eric, There's a specific bit of trouble shooting related to this. A lot of it revolves around the type of ammo used due to inconsistencies in 300 blkout ammo manufacturing across the board. But that's only part of it. Andy has asked for me to have you call him for the specifics regarding your gas block as well. (509)793-5374

Yes we finally did figure out out. First of all I never did get any emails or notifications that there were any replies to this thread, so if someone knows how I can fix that problem, shoot me an email so I can fix it. Please. The hole in the barrel for the gas block had been drilled WAY to small, so there wasn't enough gas Pressure to operate the gas system! So Andy found out what size it was suppose to be which was (100 Thousands I believe) and that is either a 3/32 or a 5/32 hole that I had to drill it out too. I have it written down on my work bench at home. I'll double check this afternoon and post the correct size later today, but it's one of those 2 listed above. I'd like to say Thank You Andy for helping me figure out what was wrong with my barrel! After I drilled the larger hole in the barrel, reinstalled the adjustable low profile gas block and put the Handguard back on the rifle and double checked a few other things. I took it to the gun range, put up some targets at 50 yards and 100 yards, as I was walking back to the bench i was wondering if this was actually going to work after everything that I had already done to try to get it to cycle correctly? I got the bench, put a clip of 110 Grain Hornady Supersonic bullets in & it cycled from the 1st shot to the Last shot exceptionally well! Then I tried s clip of Subsonic bullets and they worked fine too, so I was really impressed and extremely surprised. I tried my suppressor last and after playing with the gas block they worked really well and it shot a really nice group too. This is my 1st suppressor and I wasn't sure how much gas pressure I was suppose to set the gas block for, but I figured it out (if anybody wants to send me an email and explain to me how much gas the suppressor is suppose to get, and other things that I should know about them, feel free to send me an email) ;D
If anyone has a question about everything that I tried before I drilled out the hole in the barrel out the size of the hole that's suppose to be drilled in the barrel, send me an email.. Also, the 300 Blackout will only operate with a carbine length gas port system (that's the Maximum Length) the Pistol Length gas port operates the Best! Several companies use only the Pistol Length because of it's increased pressure from the bottom of the barrel, it guarantees proper pressure to run an AR-15 system and make it cycle properly... That's what I have been told by several Blackout shooters and also what I have read, so it's not written in concrete until you find out for yourself! Eric

Did you ever figure out the correct port size? I'm interested in the 300AAC but have seen the port size issue come up for a lot of people with all different makes...

Yes, the correct size holes in the BHW Barrel is supposed to be 3/32" Diameter Hole for the gas block to set on, if you want it to function properly.
Good luck, it's easy. Eric
