What is the best caliber for hunting deer in the NW. I have limited funds and need my AR to hunt and target shoot. Obviously the .223 cal is not ok in WA to hunt with so what are my options?
Thanks, Carboss

Thanks, Carboss You have a lot of choices. If you like the 6mm you have the 6X45, 243LBC,6X6.8. Then the 25X45 The 264LBC is a great long range deer cartridge. If you want to stay with the 5.56 case you have the 6.5PCC. Next in line is the 6.8SPCII lots of punch out to 300 yards. Some can shoot it a little farther than that. In short you can close your eyes and pick one. There is not a bad one in the bunch. The only thing that will change is the effective range on some of them.

To second what Ritch said, any of the 6mm derivatives are good ones for certain. Especially if you handload. 264/6.5grendel and 6.8spc are all commercially loaded. Some folks sell 6x45 but it's hard to find from what ive seen. But I live in Texas too! I've personally shot the 6.8 for deer and hogs and very pleased. There's a thread in the 264 subforum I started of the kills made this season with that round here in South Texas . Good luck to ya and happy hunting

If you do not reload, in a 16 or 18 light barrel the 6.8SPCII is hard to beat. Simple and effective. The 6x45 barnes solid rounds from corbon are brutal... www.shopcorbon.com/Self-Defense-DPX/6-X-45mm-85gr-Self-Defense-DPX/DPX6X4585-20/200/ProductFor those budget conscious that do not mind to reload the 6x45 is so easy and accurate a cave man could do it. Also the 6.5PCC seems a nice alternative but I personally have no experience with that one but people here has gotten very good results with it. Also the 7.62x39 (AK round) with a nice hunting bullet is pretty effective. Not as good as the 6.8 ballistically but with a 125 or 150 grain soft point is more than plenty. It is a good alternative for those with aK platforms and ammo that want the extra accuracy of the AR & impingement system. I am not sure though the BH offers the russian round as alternative chamber.

I third the 6.8 SPC II. 350+yrd hunting range. Good for yotes, hogs, deer, bear & small-medium Elk. Plenty of factory ammo & brass. 85 to 120/130gr bullets. So, no need for special dies.

Need more information.
Distance you plan to shoot?
Do you already have a AR?
Do you reload?
You stated "limited funds", If you have a AR, then 6x45, 25x45, or 6.5PCC, would be the least expensive, just a barrel swap, and you are GTG, and you should have 223 brass lying around to load with. All three will take deer out to 300 yards with a quality hunting bullet, and correct placement.
If you do not have a AR, and do not reload, than the 264LBC would be my first choice, with the 6.8SPC coming in a close second.

I plan on using the Grendel for my new deer/pig gun, can't wait to get some real world anecdotes with it.

pardon my ignorance but have never herd of the 6PCC. Is it just a necked up 223? Seams like the 6.5 bullet would take up a lot of magazine and case capacity?

You may want longer range capability but i took a deer a couple weeks ago on the E.Coast at 310 with the 6.8 SPCII i built. DRT. ;D

If you don't intend to hand load you'd probably be very happy with either the 6.8spc. or 264LBC (Grendel). I've harvested a nice doe with the 6.8spc and was very happy with it's performance. The 25-45 is also pretty interesting, but I wonder if this round will be commercially available in years to come.

LOL I hope they figured it out. IMHO the 25X45 will always be a niche round. It will never be in the LGS but someone will be loading it as long as the new Sharps company stays above water. Greg

After last years success with the American 30, I have out fitted the whole family with it in an ar. You can order ammo direct, though I choose to load it myself.

I have hunted white tail for years with a 6.8 spc. Shots were as close as 20 yards and as far away as 375 (that is what the range finder said) they all had two things in common 100 grain accubond bullets and one shot kills. That round is devastating but it doesn't screw up a bunch of meat. I believe you need at least a 20 inch barrel, mine is 22.
