Anyone have experience with the DPMS carbon fiber handguard?
wondering how difficult they are to install and the overall appearance and quality.
trying to decide on a good economical free float tube for my build, basically.

I have never personally used one. However I have had to change them out for an aluminum tube. They are not easy to get apart. I would say go with a light weight aluminum tube.

I Agree , get a good aluminum forearm and you will be so much happier in the long run.. Unless DPMS has changed the way you install the carbon fiber hand guards, you have to run the barrel nut tightly with a front piece for the forearm, then you place glue on that part and slowly slide the forearm onto it until it is straight, level and or square and then it dries into place.. It's pretty simple, until you have to remove the forearm, then you have to cut it off .. To get it back on you have to buy another one, and start all over again ... Eric

Yeah, that's crazy bought the 2 piece aluminum one instead. Good move but the three piece set ups are even easier!! No problems in orienting the bipod hole if you have to take it off and on. A real time saver on the initial build too. Greg

I just bought one from arfcom for my 24" bull barrel AR. Although it liiks nice enough, I can't help but notice the lack of a sling swivel stud. Which means I can't use my current bipod.
So now I had to pick up a quad railed gas block, so I can attach a bipod to the bottom rail; which will put pressure on the bottom of the barrel, thus defeating the entire purpose of floating the barrel.
It sure is purdy tho.

I have one but it came on my AR-10 and I love it for now. Don't know if I will when it comes time to work on it.

Although I have not used one, the AP Customs carbon fiber handguards attaches with screws and not glue. They make a vented, tactical version that has a rail on top with two 2" rails included to mount where you choose that looks appealing to me. They also have a vented, smooth version. Though, the MI SS Gen2 is not much heavier in aluminum (~3 oz. in rifle length IIRC). Just some ramblings for a Tues afternoon. -Mike

The Clark carbon fiber hand guard comes with the sling stud and backing plate. Like the others have said they also have to be glued and are a bitch to get off. I've seen a carbon fiber ff hand guard at Brownells that attaches via the standard GI barrel nut and not glued. Looks interesting but I've not tried it.
