Just put together a rifle with a BHW 18" .223 barrel I picked up on a group buy some time ago. Ran patches through it originally to clean out tooling grunge and fired away. Ran my first bronze brush through it and it about dropped through the bore Is this normal for poly rifling? Should I go to a .24 cal brush? Thanks.....

Check your brush and make sure it is not a .20 cal brush. The bore diameter of a 5.56 is still .224. Any standard .22 cal brush will work just fine

RJ, Thanks for the reply. That makes sense. Don't own any .20 cal stuff and am pretty sure I've cleaned other .223 with it, but it might be new and I ordered the wrong size. Will check it out in the morning (if it doesn't drive me crazy tonight wondering about it). If the brush size is correct and the bore is off by a couple thousandths, would this explain why I can't get it to group? Took me about 10 rounds to (sort of) zero a scope - might have been chasing flyers. This ain't my first rodeo and this build has me had me scratchin' my head....

They won't "drop" though on any barrel poly or regular. It has probably been worn out. It took you ten shots to get it sighted in? Not unusual depending on the range you start with. Most start at 25 and then move back after getting centered up via bore sighting and a couple of rounds. I would guess my average is about seven shots. Greg

OK, it's been awhile, but I have checked the brush; new-ish and correct caliber. I get what I consider the correct friction in another .223 barrel. Just assuming that what I say is true and putting aside all other variables, will a bore through which a new cleaning brush of correct size will push or drop with no other force aside from the weight of the rod affect accuracy? The brush certainly isn't cleaning anything. A .243 brush is a little snug , but doable. Still waiting for an answer from BHW. Can't see putting much more time or money into this build until I have that answer. Right now, I have about 200 rounds downrange of 77 and 69 grain factory ammo. Have handloads ready to test, but that would seem a waste if I can't get better than 4MOA with frequent flyers and a minor endcap strike (yes, I have removed muzzle devices until I get this sorted). Time to cut my losses and move on to a new barrel? Thanks....

Sounds like you may have a 6x45 barrel instead of a 223. Double check the markings on the barrel. I have a new uninstalled BHW 6x45 barrel and I just dropped a 69 grain .224 bullet through the bore and it fell through without any resistance as expected, a quick and easy test. This would explain such terrible groups, but I would think that there would also be serious cycling problems with the gun, due to no bullet seal for the gasses to operate the action.

Swamp Fox, thanks for reply. I actually did try a bullet in the bore. It didn't drop through, but I tried the same bullet in another barrel and got a more shallow mark. BHW got back to me and were kind enough to offer to take a look at it on thier dime. Once you get someones attention great service!

Did you call or e-mail them finally or rely on the board for a response? Greg

In their defense, I got busy and didn't follow up on my original post. First contact was a couple of weeks ago on the site contact then an email a week ago. If nothing else, this hobby has taught me patience. Will let you know the outcome...
