Well since i have killed my buck for the year it was time to get after the dogs again.. Since my calling partner is still after his buck i decided to ask my dad to go. No dont take that the wrong way my dad and i are close but he is bad luck when it comes to calling. I have taking him a dozen times and never called a single dog. So usually after our first set he gets antsy and wont sit still after 5-10 minutes. It drives me crazy but he is my dad and its always a trip to hunt with him. Any how this morning i opted to make our first stand on his farm. This farm is 1,100 acre chunk of farm land with irrigation ditchs running thru it and about 150 acre chunk dead in the middle of it full of old stripper pits. The big pit is 60 acres and the rest are all 5-10 acres with big sandun covered in buckbrush and briars sepeating them all. We set on the North side of the pits (south wind) down in a drainage along a dried up ditch. Behind us was miles of nothing but open fields and small ditchs creating a grid. well about 3 minutes in he starts fidgiting and looking around. so i hit him with a dirt clog and told him to stop (kinda like i do my lab in the duck blind). with the way we were set up with in the drainage we couldnt see our down wind side at all (3 foot bank behind us) but with it being open fields ever where i figured we would be ok. So after 23 minutes i decided to call it a skunked set. About the time we stand up dad said look and 2 dogs had come from who knows where across the wide open and were coming to the call from behind us. Well they saw us well before we saw them and they took off. SO i walk down get the call and we get back down in the ditch to walk back to the truck and about half way us i see two more coming in (5 minutes after call was shut off). Well we hit the ditch bank get a good rest for our guns and i pull out my hand call. I start with a normal rabbit distress and they turn and are coming on a string. I tell dad to get on the lead dog and ill bat clean up on the second. Once his dog hits the 320 yard mark (they had our wind) i stopped them with a bark. I call the shot and we shoot almost simotaniously (sp) both dogs are dead before they hit the ground. Now you have to know my he is a 62 year old 4th generation dentist and onry as he11. his only reaction was a half as$ chuckle. I knew inside he was like a boy on prom night (about to explode). He finally stopped smiling and gave me a big hug and said now what. lol... I said lets go take pictures
Dad was shooting his Rem 700 in 270wsm topped with a Burris Fulfield 2 4.5-14x44 and i loaded 90gr Sierra running hot hot hot. 3770FPS
He is the ol fart and his dog. Notice the background. These dogs came from a long ways out
Here is my dog. Now my dad took the picture with my phone so excuse the quality.
I was shooting a custom AR15 built my Ritch Johnson (RJohnson) chambered in a 20 Practical running a 35gr Berger 3940FPS out of a 24" Black Hole Weaponry barrel. This gun is sick. It shoots anything you feed it under hald inch and most in the .2's-.3's
I ranged this dog at 362 yards. I held high shoulder and hit him in the 10 ring
hope to get after some next week with the old man. He is hooked now
