So I've just started to reload some rounds for my 18" BHW barrel chambered in 5.56. Ultimately, I'm looking for a sub MOA round mainly for use on Coyotes and other varmints. So far, I've loaded rounds with 24-26 grains of IMR 4895,(24, 24.5, 25, 25.5 and 26 gr) under a Hornady 50 Gr V-Max. I will be heading out tomorrow to see what I've created. Is anybody using a load similar to this? Does anyone have any "go to" data for this barrel/caliber combination?

For my own pet loads: 24" 1/8 likes 55 gr NBT + 24.5 gr Exterminator. 20" 1/9 likes 55 gr NBT + 23.2 gr H322 16" 1/9 likes 55 gr NBT + 25.0 gr Exterminator There is a plethora of information on this cartridge, and seems to be one of the most forgiving to load. Check here, for an eyeful of data. www.accurateshooter.com/cartridge-guides/223rem/

I made it out shooting this weekend. I had 28 different loads on hand to try out. The best of the best were these:
This load measured .767" I'm sure it could have done better, but it was 16 degrees and my trigger finger was freezing. I did have three shots that were touching.
50 Gr. VMax Bullet 22.5 Gr. Benchmark Loaded to 2.200 COAL Winchester Small Rifle Primers Once fired Hornady Brass
The second load was better, but it was still cold and I had 3 of the 5 shots that were all touching. Out of 5 shots, group was .740"
50 Gr. VMax Bullet 25.0 Gr IMR 4895 Loaded to 2.245 COAL- This seemed a bit long and I want to make some more that are closer to the 2.200 length. Winchester Small Rifle Primers Once Fired Military Brass

Good shooting. Those temperatures are brutal. I grew up in Minnesota.

Thanks Greg.
I did load up 10 different loads of H335, seven with 60 Gr. Nosler Partitions, and 5 with 50 Gr. Vmax. The Noslers were loaded to COAL of 2.200, and the VMax's to 2.245. Neither of these loads seemed to be consistent. I am going to try another batch of the VMax's loaded to 2.200 and see what happens. I realize this is going to be quite the change. With the shorter length, I would expect a small increase in velocity and maybe that's why the first round wasn't so great.
I have tried inserting a bullet into a dummy round with out a crimp, then tried to close the bolt to measure the round to see what the max COAL would be but can't seem to load the round long enough. The round wouldn't fit in the mag, so I guess I will just have to play around with it? Not sure where to go from here.

In 90% of 223 you never will reach the lands at magazine lenght. I load them as long as I can with concentric run out being minimal and with adequate neck tension.my experience has been the less jump the better. On the bigger bullets I load at 2.255 but if I could go longer I would. We have a cure for that LOL
I don't use much 335 now since 8208XBR and CFE plus Benchmark have come along. I use a bunch of AA stuff also with some of the Reloader series lenght like 10 & 15.
